VE needs to work for talk pages; perhaps VE editor should be integrated into a re-write of LiquidThreads.

It will. But right now it doesn't do definition-lists, which are the backbone of Wikimedia's non-LiquidThreads conversations, so...

I think the new LiquidThreads must use the visual editor, though.
