Reading team updates April 2016 - July 2016

[edit]- We are getting ready with planning for Q2 (from Sept 2016 to Nov 2016). Both the team and the community are welcome to add their suggestions, ideas, or requests to the page Reading/Quarterly planning/FY2016-2017/Q2.
Web (Desktop and Mobile):
[edit]- After early community discussion and votes, now the language switcher is ready to move from beta to stable on mobile web. The button has moved from the bottom to the top of the page, to make it easier to browse through languages. Please check the screenshot to review the change.
- The team has been working on improvements for lazy loading of images (and references), a web trend that makes image loading faster on slow connections. Currently the team is analyzing the lazy loading after enabling on Japanese Wikipedia
- Wrapped up a collaborative community consultation around making Wikipedia more interactive for reader. Documentation of process and lessons learned is User Interaction Consultation/Documentation
- Hovercards is progressing, while keeping an eye on lessons learned. After running on stable on Hungarian Wikipedia, the team is currently planning the launch on stable to another Wikipedia for testing.
- The team is discussing displaying Wikidata descriptions underneath article title on mobile web to support faster diambiguation.
- New Readers is a scope of work that has been lead by the Reading team. Check out more on their progress and updates.

[edit]- [Android] Adding an explore feed as beta feature. Explore feed is a new way to discover Wikipedia content!
- [iOS] Version 5.0.5 is available for download in the app store, with better stability and enhanced performance
