[edit]- Requested user-rights: Translation administrator.
I'm interested in getting translation admin rights to help make the documentation pages translatable. I already have this right on Wikidata, Meta, the French Wiktionnaire and Lingua Libre (a project supported by Wikimedia France). A few years ago, I made a similar request, which was unsuccessful. I've just tagged a few new pages (see here and there for example); I hope the syntax is correctย :) Pamputt (talk) 05:28, 1 August 2023 (UTC)
- I ask this for every Tadmin request: is there some reason you can't just let Shirayuki do the work? Right now I am not seeing one. * Pppery * it has begun 02:18, 7 August 2023 (UTC)
- I could let Shirayuki do the work, but the reason I asked was because I'd found some pages that weren't marked for translation and for which I'd added translation tags.
- It seems obvious to me that it's more efficient to share this task between several people than to leave it to one person, however competent and efficient that person may be. The more people there are, the quicker the pages can be submitted for translation and the more likely they are to be translated quickly. Pamputt (talk) 14:14, 7 August 2023 (UTC)
- The downside to that is things like Topic:Xnd7su3ew0fba4py - it's better to have a consistent standard rather than have people each marking pages to their own standard. This could easily end up with Shirayuki re-doing your markup, rendering translations invalid, and causing extra work. I know this isn't really fair to you (hence I haven't formally {{Oppose }}d this request), but it is my reflection of what has happened from years of recent changes patrolling. * Pppery * it has begun 22:26, 7 August 2023 (UTC)
- About Topic:Xnd7su3ew0fba4py, I asked Shirayuki about his way to work with the translation tags because it differs of what I have seen so far. From my understanding, the Shirayuki wikicode is different but the results is the same for the final users, i.e. the translators and the readers. Pamputt (talk) 14:40, 8 August 2023 (UTC)

- Support (Honestly I disagree with Shirayuki's practice to create translation units for every single sentence) --Ameisenigel (talk) 15:14, 4 September 2023 (UTC)
- I do too, but multiple translation admins each doing things their own way is worse than one consistent standard being applied, and Shirayuki, as the most active tadmin, has set that standard. * Pppery * it has begun 16:08, 4 September 2023 (UTC)
- Why is it a problem to have several ways of tagging pages? For the translator, it doesn't change anything and the rendering of the translation will be identical for the reader. Pamputt (talk) 07:17, 8 September 2023 (UTC)
- It's a problem because Shirayuki will switch to the other way and then invalidate translations. * Pppery * it has begun 13:59, 8 September 2023 (UTC)
- He should not switch to the other way if contributors already started to translate (except for valid reasons). Shirayuki, what do you think? Pamputt (talk) 15:23, 8 September 2023 (UTC)
- It seems even better to not create that situation in the first place. Fixing a local standard for otherwise arbitrary things is common (cf code formatting styles). If you're willing to work with the existing practice then all is fine. Otherwise it is just creating needless conflict. --Clump (talk) 16:38, 8 September 2023 (UTC)
- I can adapt but I'm not sure I understand exactly what the practice is here. From the changes made by Shirayuki, I understood that I understand that you have to put one translation tag per sentence, but as I didn't get an answer, I'm not sure. Pamputt (talk) 16:46, 8 September 2023 (UTC)
- I replied there. Shorter translation units are less susceptible to changes in frequently updated MediaWiki.org pages and reduce the risk of invalidating entire translations. Simplifying and keeping translation units to one sentence in length enhances the effectiveness of translation memory . Shirayuki (talk) 22:05, 8 September 2023 (UTC)

- Maybe that is not the tagging TA's problem.

- The user in question moved Template:Synchronizer to Template:Synchronizer/text, but I reverted it. The 'automatic translation' that the user tried to add was unnecessary, so I deleted it before any effects were seen. Shirayuki (talk) 01:22, 9 September 2023 (UTC)
- ย Not done No consensus has emerged to grant the rights --DannyS712 (talk) 17:28, 17 November 2023 (UTC)
- DannyS712, I agree that there was no consensus on my request. On the other hand, I think that if MediaWiki doesn't want a new translation administrator as long as Shirayuki doesn't need help, that should be written down somewhere so as not to discourage all goodwill. Pamputt (talk) 19:49, 29 November 2023 (UTC)
- I am not in a position to decide that there should be no new translation admins - you can start a wider discussion if you want DannyS712 (talk) 19:52, 29 November 2023 (UTC)
