Community metrics/December 2012

From mediawiki.org

Third issue of the MediaWiki community metrics monthly report!

We have added a section with social media stats. Hopefully next month we will show mediawiki.org data to reflect the documentation work.

There is a big increase in the total amount of lines of code and active contributors. The addition of Kiwix and MediaWiki Editor Engagement Experiments has something to do with this. Probably Ohloh crawled more of the hundreds of repositories we have on file. But underneath this there is the main factor that the MediaWiki community is growing year-to-year!

As a contrast, MediaWiki core got the lowest amount of commits since June 2010 - probably related with the post 1.20.* releases + holidays?

Code

[edit]

The MediaWiki community includes about 523 (was 506) code contributors active in the past 12 months. A total of 927 (was 884) developers have contributed code to Wikimedia projects since the first MediaWiki commit in April 2003. The total sum appears to be 6,3M (was 5,6M) lines of code.

MediaWiki core

[edit]

MediaWiki core is the largest project by far, with 932,270 (was 925,424) lines of code written by a total of 344 (was 338) contributors, from which 155 (was 150) have been active in the past 12 months.

Last month

  • 390 (was 490) commits, the lowest since June 2010.
  • Code contributions came from 55 (was 54) contributors, including 5 new (was 7) potential contributors.

12 months

  • 6777 (was 6898) commits, down -532 (was -472) (7%, was 6%) from previous 12 months. The decrease probably is due to the different approach to commits on SVN (past) vs Git (now). Nothing to worry about, apparently.
  • 155 (was 150) contributors, up +74 (was +70) (91%, was 87%) from previous 12 months. WMF hires and Git adoption might seem to be the main causes of this great increase. Some cases of multiple email addresses for one contributors are also suspected / expected. Still, it's a clear YoY increase.

Supported extensions

[edit]

At the moment of publishing this report Ohloh hasn't refreshed the data for December. The problem has been reported. We will update this section when the new data is available.
