Wikimedia Technical Conference/2019/SmallGroupDinners

From mediawiki.org

On the evening of Tuesday 12 November 2019 we will be splitting up into small groups of ideally between 5 and 8 people. These small groups will go out to different restaurants in the city of Atlanta.

Tips

[edit]
  • Sign up to a group with people that you don't know very well yet.
  • If you are unable to find your dinner group or get separated during travel, then go directly to the restaurant instead.
  • If you are late, e-mail the group leader via their wiki username (or contact by other means) to let them know that you are traveling on your own.

Notes for group leaders

[edit]
  • You must take a receipt at the restaurant. Write the names of everyone in attendance on the back for later.
  • Each group leader must submit an expense reimbursement to Wikimedia Foundation for the dinner. Rachel will send you the correct forms and template. When you submit the expense report, include an itemized receipt and a list of names of everyone who attended the dinner.
  • There is a $40 USD per-person maximum, including drinks, tip, and sales tax. If your group exceeds this amount, please ask the restaurant to split to bill so that the group can pay for the rest on their own.
    • If you expect your dinner will very likely exceed $40 per-person, please say so below in your description so that participants can make informed decisions based on their ability to pay for this with a card, cash, or otherwise.
  • You should take care of any reservations needed on your own. If you need help, please ask someone from the organizing team so that we can help.
  • Meetings will end at 5:30pm at the Emory Center. You can meet in the lobby before going to the restaurant.
  • If the restaurant is not within walking distance, consider using Uber of Lyft for your group. If you cannot call a taxy yourself, please include this in the description.
  • You are welcome to include other optional plans along with your dinner (example: "Dinner at Restaurant, followed by optional walk around Downtown"), but WMF will not cover the costs of any other activities.

Previous examples of this process: from 2014, from 2016, from 2017

Ponce City Market - (No Group Lead)

[edit]
Type of food
Large building with lots of restaurants and a really nice food hall. Including but not limited to Indian, Italian, Pizza, Latin, Burgers, Szechuan, Sushi, Mexian, Beer Garden, Cocktails, Juice Bar, Wine bar, lots of pastry shops.
"At the heart of Ponce City Market, the Central Food Hall is becoming the most vibrant food hall and market in the Southeast. James Beard Award-winning chefs the likes of Anne Quatrano, Linton Hopkins, and Sean Brock join Atlanta’s most exciting young purveyors and restauranteurs to offer everything from Georgia and Carolinas-caught seafood, to classic burgers, cold-pressed juice, house-made pasta and freshly milled heirloom grain bread. Similar to the legendary food hall at Chelsea Market in Manhattan—also owned by the developers of Ponce City Market—the Central Food Hall is a culinary gathering place within a revamped historic space, but with the distinct character and flavors of Atlanta."

The General Muir - Amir E. Aharoni

[edit]
Type of food
American, Deli, Vegetarian-friendly (possibly GF-friendly — please check the menu).
Why this place: I never visited Atlanta and I'm not familiar with it, but we're in America, so let's eat American. The menu, the Google maps reviews, and the beer selection look good. Also, it's very close to the venue. If we finish early, we can also go have some fun elsewhere, although I'm not familiar with the city at all.
Maybe, if for some reason we decide not to go to this place, we can go to Aladdin's nearby. The photos of the hummus and the pitas on the website look good.

Meet and Transport
6 PM at the lobby. It's a six-minute walk.
Total diners
6. I want to also use the time for interesting conversation and six people is just enough. (Interesting conversation does not necessarily mean that it's about parsing and localization cache. We can also talk about structured data, frontend architecture, deployment scripts, rock music, and other things.)
