Wikimedia Apps/iOS Suggested edits project/Alt Text Experiment/Test Instructions

From mediawiki.org

Below are instructions to try out the Alternative Text suggested edit flow within the iOS app. Please note, you must have an iPhone to test, this experiment is not available on iPad.

Please pick one track only to test! You will only be able to see the Alternative text prompt one time.

Track 1: Article Editing and then Image Recommendations

[edit]

Goal: make two edits within the iOS app that are eligible for the experiment. If our logic is successful, you should only see the prompt to add alt text for ONE of your edits, or NEITHER, not both. Not seeing the prompt is still helpful, as we can verify that you were sorted into control.

Instructions: Follow the steps to be eligible for the experiment! Please share screenshots on the discussion page if you see something that looks off.

Note: If you can only complete part 1, that is ok.

Part 1: Article editing

  1. Uninstall any existing versions of the Wikipedia App on your iOS Device
  2. Join Test Flight: https://testflight.apple.com/join/Z0AU0KXC and install the Beta Wikipedia App!
    1. Install the latest version 7.5.8
  3. Choose a language to edit on
    1. If you edit in Portuguese, Spanish, French, or Chinese & would like to make a real edit on those wikis, you can do that. Ensure your chosen language is set as your primary language in the app (Settings Gear > My languages)
    2. If you do not speak one of the target languages, or don’t want to make an edit on a real wiki, add test.wiki as your primary language in the app. (Settings Gear > My languages > Add another language> Search “Test”. Reorder to make Test wiki first, or remove other languages so that “Primary” appears next to “Test”
  4. Make an edit on a page that contains an image. The image should not already have alt text (most images do not).
  5. Make an edit to the page, such as adding a link, changing a word, or adding a word, and publish the edit.
  6. After edit is published, wait and see if you receive the prompt for “Add missing image alt text?”
    1. If you did not see the prompt - that’s ok! You are probably sorted into the control group! Continue on to Part 2
    2. If you did see the prompt - you’re in the experiment group!
      1. 2 options:
        1. Click “Add” and give it a go adding alternative text to the image
        2. Click “Do not add” and fill out the survey for why
  7. If you completed the Alt Text prompt, you will see some feedback alerts
  8. Verify that you see the article page again that you had been working on (either after publishing alt text, or after having declined to add alt text)

Part 2: Image recommendations (complete after the article edit)

  1. This section cannot be completed on Test.wiki, and involves making real edits on wikis.
  2. If you speak Spanish, Portuguese, Chinese, or French, ensure your chosen language is set as your primary language in the app (Settings Gear > My languages)
  3. Navigate to the explore feed
  4. Refresh by pulling down on the page and letting the wheel spin
  5. Open the “Add an image” suggested edit (second item in feed)
    1. Note: if you are not able to see this, check your Settings > Explore Feed > and make sure the “Suggested edits” toggle is enabled. If this was off by default, please note it
  6. Choose an image to add to an article, go through flow, but on the “Add image details” screen, do not add alt text into the Alternative text field.
  7. Publish the edit
  8. After edit is published, wait and see if you receive the prompt for “Add missing image alt text?”
    1. If you did not see the prompt - that’s ok! You are probably sorted into the control group!
