Renaming this page

[edit]

Ok, now that this proposal has accomplished its mission and got Brena accepted as an OPW intern, it is time to morph it into a project page. The sections containing personal information can be moved to your profile, leaving here the sections about the mediawiki.org homepage redesign. Where should this page go? Project:Mediawiki.org_homepage_redesign? Let's get some community advice, since I'm not sure either.--Qgil (talk) 19:44, 12 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

Design document

[edit]

The design document should be written in a subpage of this page. Heatherawalls can help defining the content. I think it should supersede Requests for comment/MediaWiki.org Main Page tweaks, meaning that all the useful feedback in that page should be reflected in the design document, and that the RFC could be officially closed. With this, it would be clear that this project is where the future of the mediawiki.org homepage is being decided.--Qgil (talk) 19:48, 12 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

The Design document is still not linked from this page. Also, I think I'm a bit lost with the pages you are still working on. They need to be consolidated around this one, and none of them would be under your user page. Thank you!--Qgil (talk) 16:59, 18 December 2013 (UTC)Reply
The page User:Monteirobrena/OPW has moved to MediaWiki/Homepage_redesign along with their subpage User:Monteirobrena/OPW/Design_Document. monteirobrena (talk) 02:55, 19 December 2013 (UTC)Reply
User:Monteirobrena/MediaWiki Homepage Redesign still exists with interesting thoughts that could be integrated either to the design document or at MediaWiki/Homepage redesign. Then you have some images in Dropbox thhat, if still useful as drafts, could be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons and featured at the design documented. The good thing about commons is that, just like with a wiki page, you can upload new versions of the files keeping the URL and the history. One way to see this is the following: what is not included to the design document will be probably left behind. We need to be sure that nothing relevant is missed.--Qgil (talk) 05:54, 20 December 2013 (UTC)Reply
Yes Done. I have compiled the most important information from the User:Monteirobrena/MediaWiki Homepage Redesign and put in MediaWiki/Homepage_redesign/Design_Document. I also uploaded the image of initial mockup. Thank you.--monteirobrena (talk) 14:52, 20 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

List of pages in a navbox

[edit]

Hi. I like what's being drafted and discussed. :)

I'm a fan of navigation boxes, to help newcomers understand the scope and layout of a project, so I created {{Homepage redesign navbox }} in case you think that might be useful. Please, feel free to completely re-organize and re-label everything in it, or to ignore it completely! If you do want to use it (and once it is fixed-up to your satisfaction), just add that template to all the pages it lists. I hope/think that will allow users who are just discovering this redesign, to find their way to all of the relevant pages (and discussions) more easily. Best wishes, –Quiddity (talk) 01:20, 31 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

Thank you, Quiddity. I added navbox page and I'm sure is better now. --monteirobrena (talk) 11:37, 2 January 2014 (UTC)Reply
Ok, I'll add it to the other pages. :) –Quiddity (talk) 18:35, 2 January 2014 (UTC)Reply
Yes Done. Thank you Quiddity. --monteirobrena (talk) 13:15, 15 January 2014 (UTC)Reply

Copy texts

[edit]

Monteirobrena, Heatherawalls, it would be useful to have a place to start drafting the texts in the homepage. Even if there are many moving pieces around, we know that there is a "Download" button (or will it be a "Get MediaWiki" button?) :) Is this page supposed to be part of the Design document or a page apart? I'm happy to start the discussion about specific texts e.g. the introduction to MediaWiki, edit by edit, wiki style.--Qgil (talk) 21:02, 14 January 2014 (UTC)Reply

I think we can create a subpage of Design Document to this definitions. It's very useful to keep the mockup more realistic. Thank you for initiative ;) --monteirobrena (talk) 13:13, 15 January 2014 (UTC)Reply
Yes Done. Subpage created on the Text page.

Why a design document

[edit]

Why write a design document rather than letting users be bold and make the needed changes themselves? Leucosticte (talk) 20:06, 26 February 2014 (UTC)Reply

From my experience homepage designs are usually highly political issues, so boldness may soon turn into fisticuffs. Rather have some sort of consensus on this for sanity. --[[kgh]] (talk) 20:11, 26 February 2014 (UTC)Reply
See my reply to this question in wikitech-l when it was first asked last December.--Qgil (talk) 20:26, 26 February 2014 (UTC)Reply
