[WMF Board of Trustees - Call for feedback: Community Board seats] Meetings with MediaWiki and Wikitech communities
[edit]The Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees is organizing a call for feedback about community selection processes between February 1 and March 14. While the Wikimedia Foundation and the movement have grown about five times in the past ten years, the Boardâs structure and processes have remained basically the same. As the Board is designed today, we have a problem of capacity, performance, and lack of representation of the movementâs diversity. Our current processes to select individual volunteer and affiliate seats have some limitations. Direct elections tend to favor candidates from the leading language communities, regardless of how relevant their skills and experience might be in serving as a Board member, or contributing to the ability of the Board to perform its specific responsibilities. It is also a fact that the current processes have favored volunteers from North America and Western Europe. In the upcoming months, we need to renew three community seats and appoint three more community members in the new seats. This call for feedback is to see what processes can we all collaboratively design to promote and choose candidates that represent our movement and are prepared with the experience, skills, and insight to perform as trustees?
In this regard, two rounds of feedback meetings are being hosted to collect feedback from the technical communities in Wikimedia. Two rounds are being hosted with the same agenda, to accomodate people from various time zones across the globe. We will be discussing ideas proposed by the Board and the community to address the above mentioned problems. Please sign-up according to whatever is most comfortable to you. You are welcome to participate in both as well!

Why did you revert my edit redirecting "redirect" to the disambiguation page "redirects" instead of "Help:Redirects"? I agree that the page "Help:Redirects" is more helpful and relevant, but unless it is merged with the page "Manual:Redirects", the mainspace pages of "redirect", "REDIRECT", and "redirects" should go to the disambiguation page instead of the help page. - Maybe start a discussion on the usefulness of merging content and adding disambiguation notices to the relevant pages if the status quo is more helpful/relevant by your own admission. First and foremost this wiki is to document the software, and someone searching for help on redirects isn't going to want the disambiguation page. Not to mention it's better for SEO by hitting the help page instead. --Charitwo (talk) 03:30, 26 February 2021 (UTC)
- Probably something that would need a policy page for, but the way content is organized on MediaWiki.org can be confusing. My first thought was to suggest merging "Help:Redirects" and "Manual:Redirects", but I agree that having two separate pages with differing levels of technical detail for users versus admins/developers is a good thing. I also agree that the mainspace redirect is most useful going to the "Help" namespace instead of the "Manual" namespace. In that case though, a disambiguation page for a single pagename ("Redirects") across two different namespaces ("Help" versus "Manual") seems unnecessary if the "Help" namespace should always take priority over the "Manual" namespace for redirects. Instead of using disambiguation, a "see also" link to the "Manual:Redirects" page should be on the "Help:Redirects" page, establishing a navigational hierarchy based on technical skill: "redirects" â "Help:Redirects" â "Manual:Redirects". I will go ahead and make those changes and remove the disambiguation page but a MediaWiki policy formalizing the use of disambiguation for cases like this might be helpful. - I completely agree that having a see also link on each page (Help and Manual) to point to the other for people that end up in the wrong place is a good idea. The actual disambiguation page is a conundrum though. Because how do you determine what is more useful? Because both users and developers alike are going to end up using content from both pages...but a merge would be a messy project too. --Charitwo (talk) 03:53, 26 February 2021 (UTC)
REDIRECT
[edit]Why did you delete the redirect page of "REDIRECT"? The pages "redirect" and "REDIRECT" are distinct spellings and usages and need separate pages ("REDIRECT" is not synonymous with "redirect" since one is an action and the other is a piece of code syntax). - In terms of page redirection, the casing is irrelevant. You could type
#rEdIrEcT [[Page]]
and the effect would be the same. In terms of why I deleted it, searching is not case sensitive and having a redirect like that is pointless. --Charitwo (talk) 03:25, 26 February 2021 (UTC)
How we will see unregistered users

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.
When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.
Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future.
