About
[edit]What kind of tasks that could be done by readers or casual contributors, and which are needed (and welcomed) by editors, at the same time?
After the work on community of readers and the user interaction consultation, the Reading team would like to move forward with a conversation that helps the team frame a theme of products, where readers are actively contributing with some of the required editing tasks.
You can check the Reading team thoughts on the topic here, while below is a list of suggested tasks, and their evaluation based on some criteria. Please feel free to add more ideas, and add to criteria if needed.
Recording audio titles:
[edit]- Goal
Adding an appropriate audio micro-contribution capability to mobile apps, where there is an increasing readership, as a way to foster more user usage and contributions on mobile for audio content. New activities might inspire existing readers community with new experiences to convert more mobile readers to editors.
- User Story
When I come across an article that has a hard to pronounce title that I am familiar with, I want to contribute an audio sample of my pronunciation so that other readers unfamiliar with IPA are able to hear the correct pronunciation.
User contributes a recorded pronunciation of the article's title using their mobile device's microphone. (e.g. en:Eyjafjallajokull which can be linked in Wikidata e.g. D:Q39651#P443)
- How do we know we’ve been successful?
- Increase in addition of quality (ie., non-vandalism type) audio contributions
- Increase usage of listen feature
You can check an Interactive mockup of the idea in the link.
Image contributions:
[edit]- Goal
Adding an appropriate image via direct upload through Android app. The entry point of the image, could have one of the possible three elaborated scenarios below:
Add image via Nearby
[edit]If you allowed our app to access your geo-location, and update you with articles nearby your coordinates, then, one possibility would be to have the app sending you a notification that you can take an image of an article nearby you. A handy feature that you can opt-in for if you are sightseeing and have time. Could also work great for organized photo walk, hackathon kind of activity.
- How does it work?
- Pre-requisites: User has turned on location detection and notification settings for the app.
- Opted-in user receives a system notification when in proximity to an article geotagged nearby that is missing an image.
- Notification opened to view details about the location in question in app
- User goes to the location and takes the photo
- Preview of image which may be edited (align, crop, potentially other filters on the device).
- Confirm image will be added (prompt to login/join Commons in order to add image)
- Upload success message, pending confirmation via an image moderator.
- Notification when the image has been accepted or rejected.
Add image while reading
[edit]The idea is if someone is reading an article which is missing a lead image and they have a suitable image of on my device, they they can add it to the article.
