Eye care is an important, absent feature in the site. Even Google has it.

The “dark mode” in terms of black background (or dark grey) and white colour of text is possible for Websites with three colours only: Black, white, blue.

  • These are Google, Facebook, Twitter, eBay etc.
  • They have no user influenced colour styling.
  • They have no graphics with transparent background, just photographs or icons managed by the system which may be provided and shifted in two versions.

There is another “dark mode” which does not need to provide different documents but can be switched by each user for every webpage: Reduce the amount of blue and dim the brightness.

  • That can be used in late evening for all presentations, close to fall asleep.

For WMF wikis content area, a real “dark mode” will not work.

  • We know more colours than black, white and blue.
  • Users may specify bright colour on dark background to show the colours of a football team or a political party. If you change all colours in the bright range to dark and all colours in the dark range to bright, which needs to be done for the real “dark mode”, the meaning goes lost.
  • Authors have used images with transparent background for decades which rely on bright environment. They show something in black or any dark colour. If you change the background colour this will vanish.
  • If you just change all black text colour into white you loose contrast when this is written on yellow background since that is the corporate identity of something.
  • To execute your demand, some 100,000,000 content pages on WMF wikis needs to be rewritten and individual solutions are to be found where white text on a navy blue background is used for maritime issues. And all kind of template programming supporting that needs to be modified or created.
