Yesterday, I noticed the insert citation function stopped working. It generates the cite from a URL without a problem as normal, but when I click "insert", an empty dialogue box appears, then quickly disappears, and the cite is not inserted. This happens on Chrome and Edge browsers, I haven't tried any others. Inserting a citation in VE mode still works without a problem. Sorry if this is the wrong place to report and thanks for looking into it.

I'm having the same problem. Also with inserting templates. Using Firefox and chrome in visual and source editing modes.

Same problem which has existed for about 4 days. Sudden change and nuisance not to have this feature. Have reset my preferences to default, then selectively checked and tried different settings in my sandbox, with no resolution of the problem. Bug? ~~~~

As of today, it's working normally for me again, on Chrome.
