Make documentation more novice friendly?

Hello, I'm trying to set up citoid for my MW, and I have reached the stage where I need to import tha templates.

I have exported the Template:Cite_journal from en wp with 'Include templates' selected, and successfully imported them into my own localhost wiki, but when I go to actually cite something through VisualEditor, the template is nowhere to be found, instead I get the old menu (That only says Basic and Re-use). Could you please help?

These are the directions for enabling citoid on Wikipedia or other wiki that the foundation hosts, so it is a little less complete than the directions at Citoid, which has full installation directions. However, it could use some work too!

From the problem you've described, it sounds like citoid isn't enabled at all, but that could be many things, from it not actually being installed (check Special:Version page to verify that you have both TemplateData and Citoid extension installed) to not being configured correctly.

(If you want Cite Journal to appear in the drop-down, you need to set up Citation Tool: VisualEditor/Citation tool, however citoid should work even if you haven't done that)

Have you also set up the mediawiki message? Citoid#Configure_special_MediaWiki_namespace_Citoid_message

Also, if you open your browser console, there may be debugging messages that can help you figure out the problem.

(see also: Citoid#Troubleshooting_VisualEditor_Extension - needs updating though, I'll see what I can do!)

@MavropaliasG, how are you coming along on this? Do you need more help?

Hi @Mvolz (WMF) and @Whatamidoing (WMF) thanks for the messages. Unfortunately I didn't pursue it any further, as it was a bit overwhelming, so I am now experimenting with other parts of my wiki first before returning to this one.

This extension is much more complicated to set up compared to other extensions that I have tried. Sadly I don't think it's used by many other wikis, so there is little need to bundle it with mediawiki and make it integrated and monolithic. It would have been cool if I could just put the extension in my extensions folder, add some strings to my LocalSettings.php, run npm install and everything would work (assuming it would, by default, point to Wikipedia's zotero translators and automatically install the Templates needed for it to work). Ideally it would come bundled with already popular citation styles (APA, Vancouver etc), and Wikipedia's own style, which would be the only one enabled on Wikipedia itself.

I understand that might be too much to ask. However, why is the documentation fragmented? It's by chance that I read the Citoid/Enabling Citoid on your wiki on Citoid's 'See also'. I don't think it should be in the 'See also' section, it is an integral part of the installation, all the steps, from download to having citoid fully-function should be in a single page.

However I'm still a novice and learning about mediawiki, I will re-attempt to install citoid (and enable it) with the next version of mediawiki, hopefully I'm more skilled then!

I suggest taking it in chunks, and starting with just getting some templates imported and configured for use with VisualEditor/Citation tool.
