Same question. In addition, the translators always generates annoying spaces before and after links and reference tags, and at the end of every line when translating stuff into Chinese.
@H2NCH2COOH, the problem with unnecessary spaces may be this issue with Google translate. Note that the "initial translation" card allows to select a different translation service when available.
@Pginer-WMF Did you mean selecting when starting a new translation? The problem is only "中文" (Chinese) is provided, not its variants, and it actually supports only Simplified Chinese. This could dampen the enthusiasm of those who want to contribute in Traditional Chinese (probably the majority on Chinese Wikipedia at present, for it is blocked in mainland China, where Simplified Chinese is preferred).
Regarding machine translation, we integrate external translation services. In this documentation page you can find the list of services we support and further details. While most services seem to just provide support for one variant of Chinese, I've noticed that Google Translate supports both Simplified and Traditional. So I created a ticket to explore how those options can be surfaced in content translation too. Feel free to track or add further details to the ticket.
Thanks!
we need this. issue still exist. add traditional chinese variant or just use it as default.
And it has been 3 years since this issue been raised, no follow up and response? It is quite disappointing.
It is not an issue as there has been the conversion system in MediaWiki for over a decade.
