Sounds like a great idea, provided proper privacy controls are in place. Something as simply as anonymizing the user history (for example, for the user name - wherever it appears, including links - substituting "23August2018-NNN"), plus discarding cases after 30 days ("lessons learned" information would be retained, of course) should be adequate.

Yes, it would be very nice to know what they do. A cheaper way to experiment would be to email any of them who supplied an email address and simply ask them why they created an account X days ago but did not appear to contribute. I say "appear" as they may have thought they did! It's probably a good idea to offer help at that point.

So you might get some good quality data from simply asking. And avoids the effort of instrumenting things (which has some performance cost).

I noticed that several of them try to edit, and stopped by Abusefilters, then logout and not back again.

Torn between knowing more and giving expected privacy, even if annonymized. With low-traffic wikis like ours it may still say quite a bit about the user(s).
