Topic on Talk:Edit Review Improvements/New filters for edit review

I understand that it goes within the general trend to big noticable buttons. Nevertheless I'm frustrated, that dropdown menu of filters in ukwiki has scrollbar of 3,5 times it's length. Is that efficient?

'Other review tools' are quite informative in ukwiki (take a look), so 'Saved Filters' button placed right to it makes search result appear even lower on screen.

This scrollbar issue seems to be wired. I see it like this, don't you? If not, can you provide a screenshot? Thanks!

We have made a research that shows links on "Other review tools" are not often used. This is why we have decided to hide it in this panel. You can re-open the panel by one click, and it will remain open. Please also note that on the Recent page without the Filters, search results are also lower on the screen because of that pack of links.

We are going to make changes on the links displayed between "Показати 50 останніх змін" and the list of results. That will save space and make the two layouts quite equivalents.

I see the scrollbar as on the screenshont you gave. (Perhaps, my comment was unclear, but I meant just this: one need to scroll a lot to get to the bottom of the list).

"Other review tools" section in ukwiki is indeed packed with info, and is constantly discussed for this (though I assume that if it is still there, it is useful, even if links in it are not clicked). As for me the page was bearably long, and with new filteres now it is longer than that. If "Saved Filters" button could be placed in some other way that it doesn't push all the other info to the left (creating blank space above itself), it would be better.

Looking forward to the changes you mention :)

Concerning the scrollbar, I know there is much things to display and labels plus descriptions take a lot of space. The list would have been long no matter what. It is possible to search, by typing in the bar; that may save you time.

"Other review tools" will be changes to have a better integration with the "Saved filters" button (see T174617).

Concerning the content itself, based on the fact it is curated by the community, you may have a nice opportunity to review it. Here are my thoughts, as an external point of view:

  • links to other projects RC pages can be moved (T164952)
  • Are statistics relevant on a page dedicated to watch recent changes? :)
  • Links to New pages etc. are clearly "Other review tools" and can be hidden in a collapsible panel
  • Same thing for discussions
  • Same thing for request for administrators
  • Articles requested may be relocated to a better place. I would worth to know how many people use those links though.
  • Загальне оголошення (Community announcements?) would benefit a redesign, to save space. Then, if that's the most important thing to display all time, it may be possible to move it outside of the panel.

In all cases, we need to save space first, to ease the access to results.

Hi @Ата. Thanks for sharing your thoughts! I have a suggestion that may solve one of your problems.

It looks like one thing uk.wiki is using the Recentchangestext field for is to put announcements inside the "Other review tools" box. But there is another field that will put announcements OUTSIDE, and above, the box. It's called Recentchanges-summary, and can be customized at Mediawiki:Recentchanges-summary.

Using this field for high-value announcements makes good sense, I think. Our research shows that most of the links in these boxes are never used. And, as you know, many users don't like it when search results are pushed down, as they are pretty significantly by these links.

So, this technique lets you make distinctions between the things the community wants everyone to see—and which truly earn their spot at the top of the page—versus the things that may be useful for some people some of the time. Using Recentchanges-summary will enable you to get the best of both worlds: important messages are prominently displayed, but the page is decluttered and vertical space saved. As Trizek notes, once a user opens or closes the box, that the system will remember that user's preference. Please use this space to let me know whether this idea works for you.

I tried to pull some strings but the discussion on the template talk page brought different users in it, all of them wanting to preserve the links they find useful, in sum: everything. Tiresome. Whatever; if there will be some problems with the page in ukwiki, someone else, not me, will eventually let you know :)

Have a place where all those useful links are, more readable and dedicated to it is something we are considering to develop.
