Getting Notifications for tasks which has not been subscribed

15
Summary by AKlapper (WMF)

Due to watching a project (without being member) && having the setting to receive notifications when subtasks change

Kaartic (talkcontribs)

In some cases I get notifications related to tasks that I haven't subscribed to. I have also found that I haven't subscribed to the related tasks. How am I supposed to find the cause such unrelated notifications ? I am unable to stop receiving those unwanted notifications as I couldn't find the cause. I would be thankful for any help.

The full mail headers might tell you reasons why you receive a certain email (but I also remember one case when I failed to find out).

Feel free to forward one such email to me (but please with complete headers as an attachment, not just the subject/from/to/date headers). :)

Kaartic (talkcontribs)

Sorry for not specifying before, I received a website notification not an email. I have disabled email notifications for most cases.

Please provide a specific example (task id and comment/action id in that task), otherwise it's impossible to answer...

I get notifications for changes related to the following task even though I'm not a subscriber of that tasks or it's relatives. I guess I receive updates for some other task too, but I'm not able to find it.

That's odd. I get a 404 when I tap the above link that I created using the phab prefix but I'm able to view the task through the direct link. The interesting thing about both links is that the browsers show the same URL for both of them. Spooky !

Kaartic (talkcontribs)

Found the issue, seems phabricator minds spaces at the end of URLs (too picky). My wiki text for the above link was [[phab:T88083 | T88083]] the space between the '3' and the '|' seems to be the issue. This one works,

Whose wiki text is [[phab:T88083|T88083]

Hmm, I am afraid that I have no way to look up why you receive web notifications on that task. I am sorry. :(

Kaartic (talkcontribs)

Ok, I'll see if I could get something interesting in the future by turning on email notifications. I'm going to turn on notifications in general, if you know of any way to receive email updates for only a single task, let me know.

Kaartic (talkcontribs)

BTW, should the spookiness, described above, be reported somewhere ?

I guess you got me wrong. By spookiness, I meant this comment and it's followup.

Alright: https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T88083 lists numerous project tags. Opening all these project links and going to "Members" for all of them, but none of them lists you as a Watcher. Looking at the two dependency tasks and doing the same, https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/project/members/805/ shows that you are a watcher of Wikipedia-App-General-or-Unknown . If you go to "Settings > Email > Email Preferences > Maniphest Tasks" I assume you have "One of a task's subtasks changes status" enabled? That is my guess here.

Kaartic (talkcontribs)

Whoa. That was a great find. I don't even remember when I started watching that project. Though, your assumptions turns out to be right. I do have "One of a task's subtasks changes status" as enabled. I guess it's fixed now. Thanks for the help!
