List of Wikipedia mobile applications

In case this is useful, for background information about Wikipedia mobile apps, see w:List of Wikipedia mobile applications and related pages under "In other projects" and "Languages" in the navigation column.

I am not sure this is useful, because linking from www.wikipedia.org to a Wikipedia article could be problematic in many ways. Other than this, we have Wikimedia Apps, which focuses on project information and can also be a problematic destination for readers. Mobile projects were initially in Meta, and they were moved to mediawiki.org, so I think as for today there are no other alternatives.

We can display a happy medium for this: have a small section near the bottom of the portal page that will show all download options to all visitors to the page (regardless if the user is on a mobile device or desktop):

  • download free app for android
  • download free app for iOS
  • view list of Wikipedia mobile apps

I've created and uploaded to Phabricator a sample mock of what this could look like.

We could make a new Wikimedia Apps landing page, something like apps.wikimedia.org.

It's not just the nice URL, but the page layout and content.

Agreed - it could use some help to get it up-to-date and easier to navigate! :)

I actually like the idea of having a simple, well-designed apps "landing page" at apps.wikimedia.org a lot.

(On a separate note, I should probably point out for the record that WMF doesn't control the "List of Wikimedia mobile applications" article on English Wikipedia.)
