I am not sure we are at the point where current retro format is not working. Indeed, 17 people are usually too many for the meeting, but retro is kind of special "get together" meeting so I am concerned whether it won't create kind of team fragmentation so we have no idea what people in other sub-teams think, their perspectives, etc. I think our sub-teams are small enough that we can solve intra-team things just by talking to each other, but retro is for bigger things to be aired and everybody's chance to talk about them.

So I am ambivalent on this.

Thanks @Smalyshev (WMF). I definitely appreciate hearing another perspective!

The 15 limit of hangouts is a really big factor, and bluejeans doesn't currently allow more than 9 people to be visible on the screen at a time. Also, the current retros feel a bit rushed (to me at least), so if we were to keep the current structure, we would probably have to extend it to 90 minutes/month, or shift it to an hour every 2 weeks.

I'm also feeling like the lack of team-level retros is hurting us, although that doesn't feel like a huge problem at this point. More of a tingly sense that we could do better there.

If you find yourself shifting to thinking that we really shouldn't experiment with a change to team-level retros, definitely let me know.
