PD
[edit]Does the installer really provide the option to use that PD non-license? It's deprecated by CC, a bug should be filed for its removal if it's still there. --Nemo 22:17, 30 November 2012 (UTC)
- If the public domain non-license is so lame, why do we use it for our help pages, rather than CC-0? Since some wikis will want to use the public domain license for most of their pages (e.g. if it's a Wikisource-like repository of ancient documents), it seems handy to have it around as an option. If they have a few pages that aren't PD, they can use Extension:PerPageLicense to designate them as falling under some other license. Leucosticte (talk) 03:34, 1 December 2012 (UTC)
- Simple, we use it because when the policy was established CC-0 didn't exist yet. Changing what the installer offers wouldn't affect existing wikis, would it? --Nemo 07:56, 1 December 2012 (UTC)
- So, maybe the help pages should be migrated to CC-0? Anyway, no, it wouldn't affect those wikis, but I'm just saying that there's a demand for a public domain option because some content is ineligible to be put in the CC licenses, whether because it's centuries old, or produced by the U.S. federal government, or whatever. Some people also just seem to prefer PD to CC, for whatever reason. If we do eliminate it from the installer, I hope we at least continue to ship the icon file with MediaWiki, for use by extensions such as the above-mentioned PerPageLicense.
