Talk pages project/Permalinks

From mediawiki.org

This page offers an overview of the work the Editing team completed to introduce permalinks for talk page topics and comments.

Permalinks enable people to generate links to talk page comments and topics everywhere they are referenced within Mediawiki's interface, regardless of if and when a comment or topic is moved from the page it was originally published to.

This initiative sits within the Editing Team's larger effort to help contributors work together more effectively. To accomplish this, we built upon existing community conventions to introduce a set of features intended to:

  1. Offer experienced contributors more leverage to coordinate their work and connect with other editors
  2. Make communicating on-wiki more accessible and intuitive for newer contributors

Feature overview[edit]

Demo showing comment and topic permalinks.

Permalinks enable anyone to generate a link to a talk page comment or topic in one tap or click.

The links that get generated are permanent in the sense that these "permalinks" will enable anyone, at any future point in time, to locate the comment or topic in question, regardless of whether it is moved from the page it was originally published to.

Permalinks are available for all topics and comments, regardless of when they were originally published and the editing interface someone used to publish them. This forward- and backwards compatibility was made possible by >12-month long effort to create and backfill a new database that stores talk page comments and topics.
