please do not include filename in translation source.

[edit]

Multiposting:

For translation segments, I find it not reasonable to include stings ending with .png or any image extension: at Translations:Wikimedia Apps/Team/Android/Anti Vandalism/18/ja, I have bolded the part as below to what part you need to enclose in tvar tags, so that the filename is masked and translators will not care to put them into non-en/non-original language.

Of course you see what will happen if for example the first line have been translated the filename part, as well as after the | (bar): to give an example, the left part to the bar is the file name, you should not target as to translate. ファイル:編集巡回- 試作版 - 編集.png|アプリ内でツールを探す

I copy what is offered to translate below, and as I proofread, it looks like causing waste of time to check or trapping innocent junior translators trying to contribute. And on mediawiki, that is enough to be suspended.

Your feedback on excluding file names like .png from translations is valid. I'll address this to make translations clearer and more efficient. Thanks for your input. ARamadan-WMF (talk) 10:13, 19 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

Warning messages, switching language, report user and permission

[edit]

Thanks for your invitation to Chinese Wikipedia community, although I don't understand why I (as a active rollbacker on Chinese Wikipedia) cannot receive email notification regarding this update:) Anyway, Here is my comments regarding warning message, language switcher, report user and permission who can access this feature.

  1. Warning message: I would like to share the same concern about messages not being customizable by the local community that raised by Tacsipacsi in the phab ticket. I see that you have already working on making warning messages being configurable via the community config and it is a nice direction. It is also recommended to use community existing warning template (e.g. the list of warning messages templates on Chinese WIkipedia fyi) rather than pre-writtend saved messages. In principle, the community itself should have the ability to customize the warning message, otherwise it may violate the principle of community self-governance.
  2. Switching language: I'm curious if anyone has the ability to switch between languages, even if they don't have rollback permissions in that wiki(s)?
  3. Report user: I would like to see a user reporting feature in the future, similar to our existing anti-vandalism tool (i.e. Twinkle).
  4. Permission who can access this feature: As the next step, it is recommended that the Patroller has the permission to access this feature, as they also have the sufficient experience of anti-vandalism.

Thanks again for your effort. SCP-2000 (talk) 08:34, 25 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hello @SCP-2000,
This is Amal Ramadan, Sr. Movment Communications Speciliast supporting the Mobile Applications team in the foundation, and I am really happy with your post as we tried to reach out to the Chinese community and get their feedback; I emailed every user on the Chinese rollbackers list; it appears that your name was not included, yet we appreciate your post and I will email you for further communications between the apps team and the Chinese Wiki.
So, thank you for your feedback on the Edit Patrol tool. Apologies for the delayed response. The feature is now available on Chinese Wikipedia in the Beta version of the Wikipedia app (ensure the latest version is updated from the Play Store), and it will soon be in the main app.
  1. We’ll continue to work towards making the example messages community-configurable. In the latest release of the tool, we’ve added support for searching for and adding existing community generated user warning templates through the feature as well (T355141). Our thought was that many experienced patrollers will search and use their preferred templates. We created the pre-written Example messages to have as a starting point in the feature for communities that do not yet have standardized user warning templates (only 37 communities have standardized user warning templates).
  2. Great question, the answer is no. The feature will only display to users who have rollback rights on the language that is set as their primary language in the app. If a user changes their primary language in the settings menu to one where they do not have rights, they will lose access to the feature. If a user has Global Rollback rights, they will be able to patrol using the feature in any language (one language at a time).
  3. That’s great to know, I will bring your request to our team to learn what is possible. Are you referring to this functionality on Twinkle: Advance Reporting and Vetting (ARV)?
  4. It is our understanding that Patrollers on most Wikipedias also have rollback rights, so they should already be able to use the tool, but please correct us if that is not the case on Chinese Wikipedia. We chose Rollback rights as the requirements for this feature so that it would have the widest reach possible, while also limiting the potential for misuses and vandalism. We are open to making the feature (without the rollback functionality) available to experienced editors without rollback rights should communities request it. We can limit access by the user's number of edits, similar to our other suggested edits in the apps that require 50+ edits to use.
Thank you again for your feedback, we really appreciate it.

  1. Patroller is not a default user group, and consequently, most wikis (if I counted correctly, 317 of the 350 Wikipedia editions) don’t have this group at all. From the remaining 33, only eight wikis provide the rollback right to the patroller group (bgwiki, dawiki, hewiki, hrwiki, mkwiki, mywiki, nnwiki, trwiki). Administrators do have rollback rights by default, but not all users who do patrolling are admins; on wikis that don’t use either RC patrolling or FlaggedRevs, “patroller” is probably an informal user group: simply someone who does patrolling. —Tacsipacsi (talk) 21:58, 23 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
    Hi @Tacsipacsi,
Thank you for taking the time to gather these numbers and explain. @SCP-2000 to clarify, are you suggesting that the tool be available to users with the New Page Reviewer right as the next step? This right is not a default user group either I believe. For allowing access to the tool, we are able to set different thresholds for different languages ad hoc. It would be simpler to set these thresholds based on tenure and edit count, such as having been a registered user for at least 90 days with at least 500 undeleted mainspace edits.

    Hello, thanks for your response.
I agree that patroller is not a good next step. I found that at least 3/4 of users (on enwiki, zhwiki and eswiki) have both rollbacker and patroller permissions. If they (who only have patroller) want to access this feature, they can probably request rollbacker.
However, I would suggest that there is a configuration to allow patrollers to use this feature, and the community (especially large wiki) can choose whether or not to enable it. Even if users have a high edit count and long term tenure, it doesn't mean they have sufficient anti-vandalism experience, especially on large wikis. SCP-2000 (talk) 10:16, 2 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for this suggestion, this will hopefully be possible if we are able to use Community Configuration to allow communities to set permissions for this tool (as laid out by #2 here). For now, we are only able to change the permissions (such as adding access for patrollers) on an ad hoc basis, if it’s requested by community members. @ARamadan-WMF: Hello, thanks for your response! Yes, I am referring to Advance Reporting and Vetting (ARV) this feature. SCP-2000 (talk) 02:43, 25 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
@SCP-2000, Our understanding is that ARV is a process specific to English Wikipedia. Adding user reporting similar to Twinkle would introduce a high level of complexity for applying to all languages in the Apps. We are not able to take that on at this point in time, but we’ve noted it for the future.

dewiki feedback

[edit]

Hi @ARamadan-WMF, the WMDE Technical Wishes team received feedback regarding the edit patrol feature (permalink). In summary: The user wished for pages to be "blocked" once someone starts patrolling them, so that other users don't start patrolling the same page only to notice after careful investigation of the edit, that someone else already reverted it in the meantime. This page seems like the right space for this feedback. --Johannes Richter (WMDE) (talk) 16:21, 3 October 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hello @Johannes Richter (WMDE),
Thank you for sharing this feedback! I’ve created a ticket to include this suggestion in the edit patrol workflow. The ticket will be triaged with the Android team and software engineers. You can follow the ticket for updates, and feel free to engage in the conversation if you'd like.
Thanks again! The apps team truly appreciates your feedback—we love hearing from our users!
