Hi!
My name is Anna Zhyrnova. I found you in the Google Season of Docs.
I am interested in translating into Ukrainian language, and I can be something like a technical editor.
As a translator and editor, I work with Rocky Linux (but as a volunteer).
The link to my task is here: https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T358563
Also, you can reach me via email: ann.zhirnova@gmail.com
or LinkedIn account: https://www.linkedin.com/in/anna-z-5ba51517/ Ann.zhirnova (talk) 10:05, 27 February 2024 (UTC)Reply
Hi, Alex Paskulin and Onifade Onyinyechi, my name is Charles Uneze. I found the project fascinating as I've always loved Wikipedia. I decided to host my own Wikimedia on AWS to play with the product while improving the main documentation. Along the way, I've had the opportunity to contribute.
I'll be happy to intern with Wikimedia during the GSOD-24 season to work more on this.
Here is my task.
Best regards,
Charles Uneze Network-charles (talk) 17:55, 27 February 2024 (UTC)Reply
Welcome. Some notes on your edits to Help:Moving a page so far:
System administrators can protect a page from getting moved is not true - administrators can, not system administrators - "system administrator" and "administrator" mean completely different things in this context (I am an administrator but not a system administrator).
I also removed the bit about cut-pasting because I think it's bad advice, but it was on the Meta page so it's not your fault
The section you added (Special:PermaLink#Moving a page won't change its link) is awkwardly written and hard to understand. However, if you want to access the new page, a redirect has already been created and specified within the old page. is incorrect - the redirect is not specified within the old page. It points to it (usually), but is separate and not within it.
If you prefer to reference the new page directly on any of your pages, use internal links. has little to do with moving and it's unclear what it even means. * Pppery * it has begun 02:15, 4 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for your feedback and improvements Pppery.
I read about administrators and w:WP:BEANS, and realized where I was wrong.
However, the sentences for the section (Special:PermaLink#Moving a page won't change its link) must have been a website issue. When I attempted the scenario on my machine before making the contributions, I had the below experience.
- I created several pages and referenced them on the main page. One of the pages was named Page 9
- I moved Page 9 to Page 9a
- When I clicked on Page 9 again from the main page, it contained #REDIRECT Page 9a. Meaning I have to click on Page 9a to visit the moved page.
However, a few hours ago, I noticed that an automatic redirect was working without any issues. When I clicked on Page 9, it redirected to Page 9a and displayed the message "Redirected from Page 9" at the top of the new page. It still works. Network-charles (talk) 04:49, 4 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
Yes, moving does leave a redirect so links work. That doesn't address my other wording critiques. * Pppery * it has begun 04:51, 4 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for the feedback, Pppery. I noticed your updates on the wiki. Appreciate your help in making the corrections. Let me know if there's anything else needed. Cheers! Network-charles (talk) 05:07, 4 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
Just dropping by to say Hello (:
I'll take some time to review the docs and submit my Statement of Interest for GSoD'24 in a few days. Cheers! QuillPusher24 (talk) 10:30, 13 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

Statement of interest - Nidhi

[edit]

I'm Nidhi Parab, and as an educator, I'm deeply committed to inspiring others to engage in meaningful projects like the Google Season of Docs (GSoD) and Wikimedia. My goal is to leverage my experience and knowledge gained through this opportunity to encourage more individuals to engage in collaborative endeavors like GSoD.

Link to my Task : https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T358821

I have a couple of questions:

  1. How many technical writers are typically selected for this project?
  2. For those who are not selected for GSoD, is there still an opportunity to contribute to the "Complete migration of MediaWiki documentation" project?

NidhiParab (talk) 00:34, 1 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

Welcome. For question two, this is a wiki that anyone can edit, and the task at hand is just editing wiki pages, so you are welcome to help out regardless of whether you are selected. I'm just a volunteer with no affiliation with Season of Docs or the Wikimedia Foundation, and I did some of the migration myself and even set up the linked list of pages. * Pppery * it has begun 01:27, 4 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
And, for the first question, Season of Docs/2024#About Season of Docs says In 2024, the Wikimedia Foundation will select one project and, if accepted by Google, hire one technical writer to complete the project. * Pppery * it has begun 01:33, 4 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

Volunteering to support - Complete migration of MediaWiki documentation

[edit]

My name is Okereke Chinweotito, and I had the privilege of serving as an OutReachy Intern with Wikimedia during the December 2023 cohort. During my tenure, I was engaged in a project aimed at integrating Wikimedia Ecosystem within the BUB2 tool (Book Uploader Bot 2).

Working on this project for these past months have made me very familiar with Wikimedia Commons, WikiSource, WikiData and MediaWiki APIs and workflow. Given my extensive exposure to the technical aspects of MediaWiki, I am confident that my expertise will come in handy to the technical writer tasked with revising the MediaWiki Documentation.

I am eager to offer my assistance in reviewing the documentation, answering any questions, and ensuring that the information is presented in a manner that is clear to users and developers alike. I believe that my hands-on experience with the technical side of MediaWiki will enable me to contribute meaningfully to the revision process. Thank you

Interested in translating content into Tswana as a volunteer.

[edit]

I'm happy to share my interest in volunteering to translate content into Tswana while promoting diversity in Wikimedia Movement.

I have participated in a couple of projects as Tswana translator including Isa tool translation, Kiwix and Wikipedia article translations (Localization). Mothusi Sekhomba (talk) 11:36, 10 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi @Mothusi Sekhomba, Thanks for your interest in Season of Docs! You're welcome to add translation into Tswana as a project goal to one of the two projects listed on this wiki page, but the project should be primarily focused on making improvements to the documentation in English. If you're looking for resources about translating as a volunteer, check out Help:Extension:Translate/Translation example and translatewiki.net. I'm Anushka Saxena, a final year student of engineering with a major in Information Technology. I am writing this to express my interest in participating in the Google Season of Docs 2024 in the project- “The Wikimedia Foundation: Consolidate MediaWiki Help Documentation”.

Unhandled Exception ("Exception")

Edge transactions must have destination PHIDs as in edge lists (found key "Google-Season-of-Docs-2024" on transaction of type "41").

However, I'm still trying to resolve the error & would appreciate any help regarding the same.
