Add topicScope of the discussion
[edit]Is the scope purely technical, or is it ok to also discuss how deployments affect users and how to communicate with them? This may widen the scope of this discussion too much so I'm asking here instead of boldly editing the page. If people prefer that there be a separate discussion about that, that's ok. guillom 15:11, 5 October 2012 (UTC)
- It's up to the folks who attend. Personally, I certainly would like to talk about the communications piece, which also has a technical component (cf. this proposal, the work on Echo, etc.).--Eloquence (talk) 02:13, 10 October 2012 (UTC)
Meeting technology
[edit]How can we hold meetings remotely without relying on non-free software? Mutante suggested OpenMeetings, and Mumble is good for voice chat.... --MarkTraceur (talk) 06:29, 5 October 2012 (UTC)
- I'd prefer to avoid going into meta-level immediately. For one thing, what technologies we use for meetings is realistically constrained by who's going to set up and maintain those technologies. The advantage of Hangout in that regard is that the setup costs to get to a workable level of quality appear to be pretty minimal. It at least works (with proprietary dependencies) on free software platforms. For another, let's get into the habit of having these types of conversations, and get some experience with different types of technical setups through the process.--Eloquence (talk) 21:12, 5 October 2012 (UTC)
Instructions for joining
[edit]Hi. I just posted to wikitech-l about this, but the current version of this page doesn't seem to explain how to join the meeting. An == Instructions == or == FAQ == section (or maybe even a separate page) might be nice. It would include answers to the following questions, I suppose:
- IRC
- What is IRC?
- How can I join the IRC discussion without an IRC client?
- Which IRC channel should I join at the specified date and time?
- Hangout on Air
- What is Google Hangout?
- What is Hangout on Air?
- What do I need to do participate?
- Download a plugin?
- Establish a Gmail/Google account?
- How do I join this Hangout thing?
- Can I view the video stream without creating/using a Google account?
I realize, of course, that this is the first meeting of this kind and consequently the documentation/instructions aren't yet in a state where they should be. The other big question that keeps coming to my mind is "who is the intended audience of this meeting?", which affects what level of detail any instructions or documentation need to include. --MZMcBride (talk) 01:17, 6 October 2012 (UTC)
- Added some more details.
- Since we only rely on Hangout to broadcast video, no voodoo should be required to join; just loading a YouTube stream & joining the IRC channel should work. Eloquence (talk) 23:56, 9 October 2012 (UTC)
