Soo, 30 % in global accounts sharing username with some local unattached account (about 3 each on average)... and total unattached accounts at last decreasing, but almost nothing. :( Either bugzilla:70392 makes a good dent or we may be forced to do bugzilla:68069#c5 so that we finally get an idea of how many accounts are impossible to unify even with password. --Nemo 19:42, 9 September 2014 (UTC)
- It says that there are 3,351,422 unattached accounts with e-mail, but only about half of them have been touched in the last 36 months. An awful lot of accounts were touched about 18 months ago. Did something special happen at that time?
- If I remember correctly, old versions of Mediawiki didn't ask users to confirm the e-mail address. If a lot of the accounts haven't been touched lately, and old versions of Mediawiki didn't ask for users to confirm the e-mail address, I would suspect that a lot of the users with unattached accounts have not confirmed their e-mail addresses. Would it be conceivable to ask all users with unconfirmed addresses to confirm their addresses? I think that bugzilla:54760 is intended to handle some of these, but far from all of them. As users start confirming their e-mail addresses, re-run the script in bugzilla:69291 once in a while to catch users who have recently confirmed the e-mail address. --Stefan2 (talk) 16:23, 17 September 2014 (UTC)
- You're right, it's a big hole in the stats that we don't know how many of those 3M are confirmed; sendConfirmAndMigrateEmail.php is/was planned to be run at some point for email-unconfirmed accounts: it provides a link to Special:MergeAccount. The emailed message is rather generic so it could sent any time; the idea was to send it "later" but maybe that later has come. File a bug? :) --Nemo 06:24, 18 September 2014 (UTC)
- From what I can see, translatewiki:MediaWiki:Centralauth-finishglobaliseemail body/en is meant to notify the users listed as "Global accounts who clash with 1 or more local accounts". I think that it would also be necessary to notify all users who have "non-attached accounts", except those "who do not clash with another account" (currently about three million users).
- Sometimes, multiple people use the same user name. It would be convenient for the losing users to set the same confirmed e-mail address for all accounts as the user will then only get one global account after being forcibly renamed. translatewiki:MediaWiki:Centralauth-finishglobaliseemail body/en does not seem to catch this situation. --Stefan2 (talk) 14:56, 18 September 2014 (UTC)
- The message is more generic than that. It would help all "winners" with at least one unattached account, as well as any "loser" who used the same email address on multiple wikis. --Nemo 15:04, 18 September 2014 (UTC)
- The wording "Your email address has been set as associated with the account "$2" on all Wikimedia projects" suggests that it is only for users with SUL accounts. Have I missed something? --Stefan2 (talk) 15:21, 18 September 2014 (UTC)
