Table background colors
Colors used on the Web for backgrounds, borders, text, and decorations use the sRGB color space. Some colors have names, but most are defined into three color color schemes red, green, and blue. Each of these color schemes can have a value ranging from 0 (indicating no intensity, as seen in black areas) to 255 (indicating full intensity, as seen in white areas).
Basic introduction to color encodings and color spaces on the web
[edit]Pure black does not exist in reality; it's just dark enough that our eyes can't tell the difference from a darker area. Similarly, pure white doesn't exist; it's a light so intense that our eyes can't distinguish higher intensities because they become saturated. The perception of white depends on the light's spectral composition and is defined by the "white point" in the sRGB color space. This standard is based on human vision under specific lighting conditions, aiming for a bright white level that is not harmful to our eyes, without reflections or glare. The sRGB model uses artificial light sources and the properties of dyes in color displays to best match the range of colors humans can see, using just three primary colors.
Low blue values create warm colors like reds and greens, while high blue values create cool colors like blue. This warm vs. cool effect is less noticeable when colors are close to gray. More white makes a color warmer, and more black makes it cooler.
On the Web, colors are defined using either 256 or 16 levels of intensity for each of the red, green, and blue color schemes. These colors are represented using either 6 or 3-digit codes like "#RrGgBb" or "#RGB", where "Rr" or "R" denotes the hexadecimal intensity for the red color scheme, "Gg" or "G" for the green color scheme, and "Bb" or "B" for the blue color scheme. 3-digit codes are sufficient for most applications like text coloring, while 6-digit codes are used for accurate representation of background colors and subtle shades in photographs and artwork.
More colors can be represented precisely using the "RGB (R%, G%, B%)" notation, where R, G, and B are real values from 0 to 100, including decimals. Here, "0%" is equivalent to the hexadecimal "00", and "100%" is equivalent to the hexadecimal "FF". Some devices might support values over 100%, but negative values aren't possible in the standard sRGB colorspace, where 0% represents no light.
In data tables where background color is used to highlight certain values, using CSS styles can make the wiki code bulky and hard to edit. However, it's possible to replace the CSS style="background-color:#RGB"
with a shorter cell attribute like bgcolor=#RGB
. This attribute will automatically map to the equivalent CSS in browsers, as long as there are no competing and more specific CSS styles applied to these colored cells. (Note: The bgcolor
attribute is deprecated).
Some sRGB colors coded with 3 hexadecimal digits
[edit]If the two hex digits of each red, green, and blue color scheme are the same, you can shorten the RGB color code to 3 digits instead of 6 by using one digit for each color scheme.
So #AABBCC is the same as #ABC.
You can reduce these colors by using 6 specific hex digits: 0, 3, 6, 9, C, or F. These are selected from the 16 possible hex digits (0-9 and A-F). This creates the 216-color "web palette" for 256-color displays and includes 16 standard HTML colors. However, this palette is now outdated as it doesn't perform well on low-color depth devices, monochromatic displays, or printing. It also doesn't render photography well with limited ink colors.
For this reason, the W3C standards for HTML, CSS, and SVG specify exact RGB color values using a standard colorspace. This ensures that standard colors are consistent whether you use their names (though only a few are universally recognized and some browsers may not display them correctly), sRGB values, or HSL values. CMYK colorspaces are not supported in CSS because they depend on the device and print media, making them unpredictable and hard to select accurately.

To simplify the wiki code of the table above, replace the "background-color:" CSS styles with bgcolor attributes.
The table above fills in the missing values for 0 and F hex digits (equivalent to 00 and FF hex pairs). It shows 12 levels of red, 14 levels of green (which are easy to distinguish), and 9 levels of blue (which are harder to differentiate due to eye saturation at high blue values). Displays often reduce blue levels to make screens easier on the eyes in dark environments without significantly altering color quality. This wiki, for example, uses a background with lower blue levels to reduce eye strain and mimic the appearance of natural paper for better reading comfort.
The human eye is very sensitive to green at medium intensities, so additional values are provided for greens in the medium-high range. In the sRGB color space, high values are compressed, making medium intensities appear as medium-high values. This table offers a wider and clearer range of colors compared to the next section, which has fewer distinguishable colors.
Some colors coded with 6 hexadecimal digits
[edit]This table organizes hundreds of colors. AA, BB, and CC represent hex digits for the brightness of red, green, and blue, with 256 levels each. This allows for 16,777,216 different colors.
