Search Platform Team Sync 11/26/24

[edit]

The Web team met with the Search Platform team to discuss traffic implications of the A/B test to the MoreLike API as part of work on T378118.

MoreLike currently stays fairly busy at 80-100M requests per day primarily through the RelatedArticles extension. The main concern of the Search Platform Team is to ensure that this A/B test is using the same shape of API requests and thus share the same caches. This will help keep the load down on the search side and ensure better response times to the users by using an already well populated cache. Since our A/B test is based on session id, we should expect to see a similar distribution to Related Articles, so we just need to alert the Search Platform team when the A/B test starts and which wikis so they can monitor.

The Search Platform team raised the concern that MoreLike could be slower on different languages, but that we don't have good numbers on it. The web team should clarify the deployment schedule for the different wikis, and see if we can spread out the deployments.

Estimated autocomplete opens

[edit]

This reports the number of page loads that submitted at least one autocomplete event. This seems like a reasonable proxy for the minimum number of autocomplete opens we should expect.
