[edit]New icons and Android browser specific
[edit]http://jonrobson.me.uk/wikipedia/experiments/nav/index-final2.html
Before new icons
[edit]http://jonrobson.me.uk/wikipedia/experiments/nav/index-final.html
- Where is edit? I would expect the main menu to have an edit link and icon...
- It'll go into page actions Tfinc (talk) 19:38, 30 April 2012 (UTC)
- There are 2 places to "click" and popup up menus and options. Clicking to the right of the search bar is not obvious but the "W" has been used before and think it's somewhat familiar and okay. Aude (talk) 19:53, 30 April 2012 (UTC)
- When I click on the 3 dots (to the right of the search bar) and expand the menu, I'm a bit unsure what the 4 icons / buttons are supposed to do. The globe, I'm guessing, takes me to the Wikipedia home page? one is the table of contents? one is to add a bookmark (or to my watchlist?) and the other I can't guess. Aude (talk) 19:55, 30 April 2012 (UTC)
- Nearby is relevant only on the Wikipedias which actively encourage its addition to articles. It should be moved out of the core app (and an optional menu item) because while it will be useful for Wikipedia and Wikinews, it will be rather less helpful for Wikibooks or Wiktionary. - Amgine (talk) 20:51, 30 April 2012 (UTC)
- Wikipedia uses a ton of sound files, Wiktionary even more, and many other wikis likewise. Wiktionary app added a 'Listen-in' menu item to play audio files on the page due to the js player not working, but it's rather a kluge. - Amgine (talk) 20:51, 30 April 2012 (UTC)
Back button cannot be hidden underneath a menu
[edit]- Currently, the back button is hidden underneath the action menu in the upper right hand corner. The back button needs to be plainly visible. Wasn't there going to be a bottom bar for iPhone app + Android (iPhone/safari would rely on the safari chrome). Howief (talk) 21:10, 30 April 2012 (UTC)
Page menu
[edit]- The set of icons in the fold-down page menu don't align to the right side of the screen when rotated to portait mode. --brion (talk) 21:26, 30 April 2012 (UTC)
- There's not good UI feedback when pressing the icon; nothing visible on iOS, and just a blue rectangle flashing over it on Android. Until the menu fades in or out a half second later it's not obvious that you've hit a UI element correctly. --brion (talk) 21:29, 30 April 2012 (UTC)
Spacing
[edit]- there seem to be a couple fewer pixels on the top of the search box, menu etc than there are on the bottom, it looks a little cramped. --brion (talk) 21:27, 30 April 2012 (UTC)
Android
[edit]- Within the main menu screen you can trigger a useless full screen search if you tap the far right. This is bad as the corner is one of the easiest trigger points on a phone
- When tapping the Main Menu Button, I would like to be able to get back to the article by tapping any part of its layout, not just the W button a second time.--Eloquence (talk) 00:15, 28 April 2012 (UTC)
- FWIW I had planned to make it possible to swipe to the left or right on feature phones so as not to rely too heavily on the button. It's just been a busy week so I didn't squeeze that in. Although this doesn't solve the problem for older devices especially if accompanied by a visual clue (e.g. an arrow pointing to the left in the top right on a first time load Jdlrobson (talk) 12:52, 28 April 2012 (UTC)
- The W button unlocks crucial functionality, but it's not visually clear to me that it does unlock anything. It's impossible for me to "un-know" that it carries important functionality, so this is an area where user-testing will be very useful. Overall I think the slide-in menu is very clear and slick.--Eloquence (talk) 00:15, 28 April 2012 (UTC)
- There was another icon which has an arrow pointing left which might give this clue Jdlrobson (talk) 12:52, 28 April 2012 (UTC)
- We can fix this easily if we add a contrasting background to the search bar. That way the main menu button pops out visually
- http://jonrobson.me.uk/wikipedia/experiments/nav/index-final3.html experiments with an animation on startup that shows the Wikipedia icon and grow and shrink back to normal size. This draws attention hopefully to the fact the icon is special.
- I don't see an animation here on iOS 5.1/iPod Touch, but it may be because the top bar loads underneath the browser's URL bar. I think I see it on Android browser (ICS), would get annoying on every page view. :) --brion (talk) 21:19, 30 April 2012 (UTC)
- I worry that the current action icons are pretty cryptic without any supporting text, and that they'll likely not get used much. Are there any kinds of hints that we could use here, or should we test it against an alternative format? Again, I'd love to do some user-testing, asking questions like "Imagine you'd like to share a page with your friends, how'd you go about doing that?" "Imagine you'd like to read this page in another language, how'd you do that?" --Eloquence (talk) 00:15, 28 April 2012 (UTC)
- Seeing the other mocks with text now, my preference is definitely for an action bar with labeled icons.--Eloquence (talk) 00:19, 28 April 2012 (UTC)
- I really like the new mocks with text. Recommend capitalizing though. --brion (talk) 21:19, 30 April 2012 (UTC)
- There's no longer a "Clear search" button in the search bar.--Eloquence (talk) 00:15, 28 April 2012 (UTC)
- I must confess I paid barely any attention to the search I think I just didn't upload the image for that Jdlrobson (talk) 12:52, 28 April 2012 (UTC)
4.0
[edit]- Android native browser uses the same three dots for its action bar. While this is great because users recognize it it's jarring because as a user i think something has gone wrong due to this duplicate icon Tfinc (talk) 21:47, 27 April 2012 (UTC)
- Hadn't noticed this, but I am using Mozilla's Aurora. - Amgine (talk) 21:09, 30 April 2012 (UTC)
- Slider animation for the main menu is jerky. Patrick says that this is fixed in newer ICS releases (4.03) but its a jarring experience Tfinc (talk) 21:58, 27 April 2012 (UTC)
- Currently using webkit transitions which are known to have terrible problems in 4.03. We could use javascript to create a nicer experience. Jdlrobson (talk) 12:52, 28 April 2012 (UTC)
- Also trouble in Mozilla's Aurora. Each menu in the mockup works once per page load. - Amgine (talk) 21:09, 30 April 2012 (UTC)
- I can't scroll the page on Android 4.0.2 (Galaxy Nexus). Double-tapping zooms in slightly, and can't be undone that I can tell. --brion (talk) 21:06, 30 April 2012 (UTC)
- Same difficult on Android 4.0.3 (Samsung Nexus S), with one caveat: going from landscape to portrait allows scrolling once. - Amgine (talk) 21:12, 30 April 2012 (UTC)
- Images are fuzzy, need to be higher-resolution (xhdpi screen). --brion (talk) 21:06, 30 April 2012 (UTC)
Opera Mobile
[edit]- Page options icon overlaps with search box. --brion (talk) 21:36, 30 April 2012 (UTC)
- can't scroll --brion (talk) 21:36, 30 April 2012 (UTC)
Opera Mini
[edit]- can scroll, yay!
- Page options icon overlaps with search box. --brion (talk) 21:36, 30 April 2012 (UTC)
- W menu and page options menus are slow to load, show URL/progress bar over part of our UI while it loads. --brion (talk) 21:36, 30 April 2012 (UTC)
Firefox XUL
[edit]- can't scroll --brion (talk) 21:39, 30 April 2012 (UTC)
- swipe right/left to open/close W menu mostly works, but sometimes doesn't seem to trigger. Also it prevents swiping right to get at Firefox's tab list off the left of screen. --brion (talk) 21:39, 30 April 2012 (UTC)
- double-tapping causes zoom which you can't zoom out of --brion (talk) 21:36, 30 April 2012 (UTC)
- Page options icon overlaps with search box. --brion (talk) 21:36, 30 April 2012 (UTC)
Firefox native
[edit]- can't scroll --brion (talk) 21:36, 30 April 2012 (UTC)
- double-tapping causes zoom which you can't zoom out of --brion (talk) 21:36, 30 April 2012 (UTC)
- Page options icon overlaps with search box. --brion (talk) 21:36, 30 April 2012 (UTC)
- tapping on W or page icons often does nothing, gives no feedback --brion (talk) 21:36, 30 April 2012 (UTC)
- swipe right/left to open/close W menu seems to work
iOS
[edit]- We need higher res icons. Some icons like the 'W' looks blurry on a retina display Tfinc (talk) 21:58, 27 April 2012 (UTC)
- Can't scroll in iOS 5.1 on iPod Touch. --brion (talk) 21:13, 30 April 2012 (UTC)
- Swiping right/left to open/close the left-side menu seems inconsistent (tested iOS 5.1 iPod Touch). Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't seem to trigger. --brion (talk) 21:13, 30 April 2012 (UTC)
