Needs more explanation

I think this page needs more explanation. What should the URL point to? The default given, http://commons.wikimedia.org/shared/images, doesn't appear to be a valid path on Commons so we can't use that as an example. --Kingboyk 18:17, 18 November 2006 (UTC)

Totally agreed.

• explain what the URL points to: why is there a "host" part and then "/shared/images", which is never seen in MW URLs ?
• possibly give an example based on the standard nomenclature, eg you have http://en.mywiki.org/wiki/<page>: what should you set $wgUseSharedUploads to?
• explain how this setting is used. I assumed something like: on [[Image:<filename>]], MW looks for filename in its own /images/ directory, and if not found, emits a sheer href=$wgUseSharedUploads/File:filename in the output HTML, but this seems not to be the case
