I think that the answer to your question is "apparently, not any time soon". ;-)

The translation extension copes poorly with modular components, and there are four different setups for citations in VisualEditor across WMF wikis. I've not found a graceful solution.

Can the citations be called within another template?

Imagine a template that includes one field to add a citation (i.e. Template:Dita in Wikiquote Catalan). Imagine that you are editing that template with VisualEditor. Would there be a way (via TemplateData) to allow users to add citations "visually", from the edit template interface itself? In other words, can the Citations VE plugin be called when editing a template with VE?

Are you asking whether the auto-magic citoid service is available inside the template dialog, so that you could have it fill in a parameter ("|refs=") with a citation template ("|refs={{cite book|author=Alice Expert|year=2017|title=The Big Book, etc}}") ?

(The answer to that question is currently 'no', but it might be possible in the future.)

No, this is not about Citoid but about the ability to call a template while editing the fields of a template.

Do you want to be able to create {{cite book|title={{language|code=en|text=The Big Book}} }}, or something more like {{quotation|text=Hello, world.{{cite book |author=Alice Expert|year=2017|title=The Big Book, etc}} }} –with citoid filling in the citation template in the middle of the template?

I am not explaining myself well, sorry. Please follow these steps:

  1. Go to a random page in https://ca.wikiquote.org/ i.e. https://ca.wikiquote.org/wiki/Jules_Renard (we are not going to edit it, so no worries).
  2. Open that page with visual editor (Modifica)
  3. Click Insereix (Insert) > Plantilla (Template).
  4. Add the template "Dita" (Quote).
  5. A window with the fields of the Dita template will appear. Locate the field "Referència bibliogràfica (afegiu-la entre ref /ref)".

Now editors have to introduce manually the exact wikitext corresponding to a reference. What the Catalan Wikiquote editors are requesting is this:

6. Click that field 'Referència biliogràfica".
7. The same dialog as Insert > Reference appears.

I hope the request is clear now.
