No translation to English works

Veverve (talkcontribs)

I am far from being a new user, but I cannot select to use Machine Translation in the dropdown menu. @MJL:

MJL (talkcontribs)

@Veverve I'm not sure why I was pinged. Is there something I could do to help?

Veverve (talkcontribs)

Well, from what I understood you can, am I mistaken?

MJL (talkcontribs)

Oh, now that I'm look at the post below... I get why you might think that. I have no clue why I chimed in there since I'm not experienced in this subject at all.

Yeah, @Pginer-WMF would probably know more than me.

@Veverve Actually, according to @KartikMistry it's because machine translation is not available to English Wikipedia yet.

Huh.

Veverve (talkcontribs)

Then is Content translation/Machine Translation wrong? It says nowhere it does not work in English, quite the contrary it states "Enabling machine translation for a language: Available machine translation system for particular language or language pair is enabled as a non-default option. Users can choose it through the drop-down menu on the interface. (see image)"

Veverve (talkcontribs)

Sorry to ask again, but what can I do for the Content translator to work for me?

Veverve (talkcontribs)

I do not understand what I am supposed to do to make CX work. Could you explain in terms that someone like me, who has not understanding of how code-related things work, can understand? I think it is also worth updating Content translation/Machine Translation to explain everybody.

MJL (talkcontribs)

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

MJL (talkcontribs)

Smarter people than me should be weighing in soon now that I've pinged them.

Veverve (talkcontribs)

It has been 5 months and the problem still persists.

Why won't it ever translate from Portuguese to English

I am the creator, for example, of the Ele Não movement arcicle. By hand. It looks good, doesn't it? It is well written, mostly

Bageense (talkcontribs)

Crap. How can I not be a "new user" anymore?

MJL (talkcontribs)

@Bageense: That's weird.. you're not a new user... yet you also did use the tool (yikes). In the future, you might want to create something like that in draftspace, but I'm not exactly sure what issue you are having there specifically.

Also, please ping me for faster responses. :)

MJL (talkcontribs)

@Bageense, Thank you for pinging me. I just tried this process myself and had it fail on both English Wikipedia and Wikipedia in Scots. However, I did have success translating it in . You might like to try that, but I guess Machine translation is disabled otherwise. Maybe @Vermont would know because they are smarting than me..?

Vermont (talkcontribs)

Not particularly sure; I have very little experience making articles with Content translation, and 0 experience writing with machine translation other than deleting bad ones. I’m not sure what the issue is, but I will say it’s better to translate it yourself as machine translations aren’t always accurate. It could be that it requires NPP rights on the English Wikipedia to use it.

Bageense (talkcontribs)

Actually, Google Translator is quite accurate nowadays

MJL (talkcontribs)

@Vermont I have those rights as of recently. :/

Machine Translation for English Wikipedia is not available yet.

translated page requiring NPP

Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs)

Hi! I am autopatrolled on the English Wikipedia, but when I translate items they now require W:WP:NPP. Any ideas if this is intentional? Best example is Naoyuki Ōi that I translated from German to w:User:Lee Vilenski/Incubator/Naoyuki Ōi, and then moved to mainspace when finished. Not that I mind, but I create a lot of articles, and I'd rather not have valuable NPP reviewers on these articles if possible.

Translation Services not available

Hi all, I've been looking to try and do some content translation for pool articles to/from the German Wikipedia, which in places is better equipped. However, the automated tool says that this is not available.

I understand the need for this to stop people pushing suitably badly sourced/poorly translated articles to wikipedia mainspace on masse. However, I would like to put a rough translation to draft space, and then edit this (and add better sourcing). I've been doing this manually for a while, but is this something this tool could offer me? As it currently works, it actually takes more time than doing via word.

Pginer-WMF (talkcontribs)

Thanks for the feedback, @Lee Vilenski

We have been following a gradual process for enabling machine translation on different languages. Getting community feedback is very useful to move this process forward, and I mentioned your comment in this ticket to capture the request.

The new version of Content translation provides new mechanisms to control in more detail how much of the original translation is modified, which encourages a proper use of machine translation and provides better tools for the community to review them at a larger scale. This will contribute to benefit from the good use of machine translation while minimizing the problematic cases.

Thanks!

Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs)

Ok, no worries. Am I just assuming that German is a Work in Progress?

I think my biggest question going forward would be if things such as infoboxes could be integrated into the system (as a lot of infoboxes are liked on metawiki)? Currently when I've looked, the translator attempts to change these into markup, which isn't much help. Is this something that would be possible?

The page does not answer the question, why English and German can not be the target language for machine translation. – I guess, wikipedia wants to prevent that all articles would be made available in English and German, as they are the largest wikipedias already. Is it? Any ideas? --~~

KartikMistry (talkcontribs)

Thanks for your interest in Machine Translation in English and German. See en:WP:CXT for detailed explanation.
