Purpose of the extension
[edit]Thanks for updating this page. It's not clear how the extension fits with the current functioning of the archival services: but wikiwix and Internet Archive seemingly archive all links Wikimedia may ever need, so there seems to be no use in Wikimedia for an extension to archive URLs. An extension would be useful to put the archived content into use. Nemo 18:58, 10 February 2016 (UTC)
- How do you know such an extension is not needed? I used to run into non-IA-archived links all the time. The IA is big but the Internet is even bigger, and media articles are often taken down, moved, or hidden after a few days/weeks/months. If this extension is not being used, how is IA supposed to know about all URLs used on WMF projects and archive them? --Gwern (talk) 19:22, 10 February 2016 (UTC)
- The Internet Archive now crawls all external links used from Wikimedia wikis' articles, see Archived Pages. Nemo 19:32, 10 February 2016 (UTC)
- I see. But that would only cover WMF wikis, no? So there is a still a role for non-WMF wikis using MediaWiki who want their links crawled as well. --Gwern (talk) 21:03, 10 February 2016 (UTC)
- Sure, I said "no use in Wikimedia". As for other MediaWiki users, I'm certainly the wrong person to ask why tehy would be uninterested, as I'm the one who just unarchived the extension. :) Nemo 21:25, 10 February 2016 (UTC)
