Information

Use this page for requests for:

Note that Requests for comment and other miscellaneous requests should not go here, but instead to the Project:Village Pump or Administrators' noticeboard if you want to avoid using Structured Discussions.

Any new flagging to +sysop should have an associated subpage here, except for well-established developers, where a developer is someone who has had changes accepted to the MediaWiki core or a MediaWiki extension where the total number of changed lines in the relevant whitespace-insensitive diffs exceeds 100.

The autopatroller group can be assigned by administrators, too, but generally that is given when an admin notices that patrolling someone's edits does not add any value, and not based on requests by the user themselves.

One thing to keep in mind is that unlike most Wikimedia sites, this site is controlled by the MediaWiki developers, not the other users in this community. Being a developer (someone with merge access who uses it to maintain code that runs on Wikimedia sites) automatically entitles you to at least administrator status, and a long-time developer won't find it hard to become a bureaucrat. If you are not a developer, you do have to give some good reason to get any privileges; you should not expect to ever be made a bureaucrat. Something like a third of administrators and a quarter of bureaucrats are non-developers, however, so it's not like you shouldn't bother asking.

That said, there aren't really any formal policies on what's required: you just have to convince a bureaucrat. Use common sense – if you are trustworthy and your services are in need, there's no reason not to promote you to administrator at least, but don't ask for administrator without giving a concrete reason (unless you are a developer). Being personally known to a developer or having administrator or higher status on a major Wikimedia project are two ways to be deemed trustworthy. This is a wiki that has opted in to allowing global sysops to work here, and such users are free to use their rights on this wiki and do not need to separately request administrator. The same applies to global rollbackers, who are already autopatrolled on this wiki. Other users in specialised global groups (such as global interface editors) are also free to use their rights on this wiki by default.

User:SG (WMF)

Requested user-rights: Administrator.

I gave Shahyar Ghobadpour administrator rights because he needs them for his work on Flow.--Jorm (WMF) (talk) 22:21, 18 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Please expand on "needs". Peachey88 (talk) 02:28, 23 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@Jorm (WMF): See above, apparently there's still an open question. Vogone talk 13:44, 30 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
He's the front end developer for flow. As such, he has to build and test interfaces. Interfaces that change depending on if the user is an administrator or not. He is also an employee, and we tend to give sysop to foundation staff as a rule when requested. Is this satisfactory?--Jorm (WMF) (talk) 20:43, 30 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
MW Wiki is not a test wiki for that type of stuff, See test,test2 or betalabs. And I thought we had gone past handing out to sysop rights to just anyone these days unless they actually proposed a reason and it was deemed "decent". Peachey88 (talk) 09:01, 21 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Policy has been, and I quote,

Any new flagging to +sysop should have an associated subpage here, except for staff and well-established volunteer developers, where a developer is someone who has had changes accepted to the MediaWiki core or a MediaWiki extension where the total number of changed lines in the relevant whitespace-insensitive diffs exceeds 100...don't ask for administrator without giving a concrete reason (unless you're a developer)."

User:WikiBronze

Requested user-rights: Translation administrator.

Translation student and experienced translator. Translator on TranslateWiki (joined recently), patroller on Turkish Wikipedia, translation administrator (granted recently) on Commons and Meta-Wiki. Requesting translation adminship to mark the pages on MediaWiki that need translation and also administer the translation requests relating to Wikimedia Turkey. I am also planning to launch an expedition with the translators of Turkish Wikipedia Community to deal with over 25.000 messages (as in translation message groups) on various wiki projects that is waiting either to be translated or updated, and one of these projects is MediaWiki. Therefore, being a translation administrator would make my life considerably easier. I have thoroughly read and understood[*] the following list of documents concerning the translation, translation extension and translation administratorship. I have used the extension before and I know how it functions. --WikiBronze [T] 14:10, 30 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your advice. I will work on that. --WikiBronze [T] 17:58, 9 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

User:MeikoBot

Requested user-rights: Bot.

I'd like to have this account of mine (verify ownership) be made a bot so that it can perform basic cosmetic changes to pages, carefully of course, using pywikibot. --GeorgeBarnick (talk) 01:15, 8 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Edit: Maybe I could also have it periodically clean the sandbox? It seems like this isn't something that's done by a bot consistently, so I could have it done by a bot too. --GeorgeBarnick (talk) 03:21, 8 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

  • Support Don't see why not. --Goldenburg111 (talk) 01:16, 8 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Can you please be more specific about what kinds of changes? Why do you need a bot for it?--Jasper Deng (talk) 01:17, 8 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
    • It'd be using Pywikibot's cosmetic_changes.py script, where it would automatically go through pages and show me what it wants to change, and I'd manually say "yes" or "no" to it. What the script does is fix some basic syntax issues or common mistakes people make in wikisyntax, for example it'd change [[Example|examples]] to just [[example]]s. --GeorgeBarnick (talk) 01:20, 8 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
      • So if I understand correctly, then it's like en:WP:AWB, for which I don't think you'd need a bot account for.--Jasper Deng (talk) 01:21, 8 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
        • Yes. The only reason I figured it'd be best to have as a bot would be to not flood the recent changes and/or peoples' watchlists. Since it is automated/semi-automated (depending on how it's run), it can make many edits in a short timeframe, which I'm sure you can imagine can get obnoxious it it weren't flagged as a bot edit. --GeorgeBarnick (talk) 01:23, 8 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • I'm fine with this, giving it a few days for other people to voice their opinions otherwise I'll go ahead and +bot it. Even if manually driven, having the bot flag is nice to avoid the RC flood as well as since it has the potential to hit user talk pages. --Skizzerz 04:48, 8 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Will the bot be making only cosmetic wikicode changes that don't create a display difference or will there be noticeable changes to the display of the pages? Peachey88 (talk) 09:04, 21 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
    • It shouldn't make any display changes. I'll also be doing what I can to make sure it doesn't mess up translation pages, but it shouldn't be able to do that. Like I said, I'll be keeping a close eye on it and manually telling it which pages to edit for a while just to see where any possible problems with it may be. Once any possible problems are worked out, I'd let it be more automated. But starting out, it will be semi-automatic so I'll make sure it doesn't make any mistakes. --GeorgeBarnick (talk) 14:56, 22 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

  1. The good and the bad are intermingled in Chinese contents, so I want to use glossaries to keep the consistency and make a better translation. (See Project:Translation administrators and Help:Extension:Translate/Translation best practices#Consistency) Actually, it can speed the translation.
  2. Fix many namespaces in Chinese to fit the convention in Project:Language policy#Old system. Those namespaces were translated into Chinese other than using the language code in the subpages.
  3. I want to translate Template:User groups and other pages like this (e.g. Manual:User rights) into Chinese, but there is no "translate this page" link.

Requested user-rights: Administrator.

Hello. I would like to request administrator access to help in the deletion of obvious spam/promotional pages and blocking of spam-only accounts or IPs. I have a lot of deleted contributions and often patrol this wiki as a member of the Small Wiki Monitoring Team. I am a sysop on the Spanish Wikiversity. Thanks in advance, Leitoxx (talk) 20:38, 25 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Jasper Deng Lo de hat collector era antes. Si pasas por acá dice claramente «Courtesy blanked» el error ya se ha subsanado. Cordiales saludos Leitoxx (talk) 02:20, 26 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@Leitoxx: I think the request on Wikidata shows that my concerns are still valid.--Jasper Deng (talk) 02:23, 26 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@Jasper Deng: in Wikidata i request the permission of rollback already that i like revert and the script (Twinkle) cant't use, and so, I'm requets the permission. Only is that, nothing else. The Hat-collector era before. All permissions that now have,Them have acquire with time, dedication and acierto. Himself that before not know the policy, but now, the lern know. Always treat of forgot me past dark, but only have someone that him have remember :-(. I'm sorry if my English don't that understandable, but the Wikidata be because i necessity by revert vandalism or changes no want, and no by obtain 'hat'. Kind regards Leitoxx (talk) 02:32, 26 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
N Not done No support for this, and it's been a few weeks. --Skizzerz 13:54, 10 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Requests for renames

Information on how renames work is available on Wikipedia. Archives: 2014 (Previous years).

Example request:

=== Oldname → Newname ===
I'd like to change my username to "Newname" because that's the
username I use on other projects. Thanks! - ~~~~

Vitalik7 → Vitalik

I'd like to change my username to "Vitalik" because that's the username I use on other projects. Thanks! - Vitalik7 (talk) 16:14, 12 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Since User:Vitalik is not attached to your SUL account, could you please verify ownership of it? Also I don't think this is really necessary if you can use that account instead since this is your only edit here.--Jasper Deng (talk) 03:35, 23 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

TheMightyHercules → CmdrDan

I want to change from TheMightyHercules to CmdrDan as it's easier to type and I think it's a better name. - TheMightyHercules (talk) 18:12, 24 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Yes Done--Jasper Deng (talk) 06:00, 10 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Getting my SUL sorted out across all projects. sv:User:Macuser, en:User:Macuser is my name in almost all projects. It seems Macuser in mediawiki had no editions or activity. Many thanks. Macuser2 (talk) 16:49, 2 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Macuser2: Please verify that you are indeed the owner of the Macuser SUL account. You can do this by e.g. making an edit on the English Wikipedia stating "I am mw:User:Macuser2 and wish to use my SUL account here."--Jasper Deng (talk) 06:02, 10 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Done. [2] Macuser2 (talk) 20:40, 15 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Yes Done--Jasper Deng (talk) 02:38, 16 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! Macuser (talk) 08:07, 16 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

ציפור → Iloj

I'd like to change my username to "Iloj" because I want a latin-script username. Thanks! - ציפור (talk) 14:42, 9 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Inquisitor Ehrenstein → Lieutenant S. Reznov

We've dropped 40k web projects in replacement for educational goals and I'm pretty much indefinitely out of the hobby along with DondreKhan, so the inquisitor title is meaningless. For anyone who understands the game, it's mainly because of prices and GW releasing plastic stormtroopers and dropping the number per box by half. I need money for going to parties. ಠ_ಠ Inquisitor Sasha des Ordo Scharzenkommando (Talk) (Contr) 18:18, 15 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Yes Done but please note that you shouldn't count on being able to change your username that often. You should commit to a particular username for an extended period of time.--Jasper Deng (talk) 02:38, 16 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Mark Extension:Education Program page for translation

I would like to begin translating Extension:Education Program to Spanish language, but I need a Translation Admin or someone with permission to mark it for translation. Thanks. --Zerabat (talk) 17:56, 1 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Please block users for identity theft (falsely impersonating others) and repeated vandalism

Hello - Can you please block the following users for repeated vandalism: Wiki Dick heads, Don't work for Skilled! , Abused by SKILLED. Please also block the following users: Pborobokas , A Pizzoni , Richard(E) Glover , Peter Eaves. These are false impersonations of staff members at SKILLED Group and the user is posting dafamatory comments. We know who is doing this and are following this up in Australia.- ltobrien

Hello. This does not appear to be happening on this wiki. Did you mean to post this on some other wiki? (in that case, we have no responsibility for it).--Jasper Deng (talk) 03:30, 23 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion request

Hello, I don't know whether it is the good place to ask, but could you delete this page ? Is is a (blanked) copy of this message. I did a mistake when saving it twice. Thanks in advance, NemesisIII (talk) 19:36, 4 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@NemesisIII: Yes Done. Jdforrester (WMF) (talk) 20:06, 4 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion request #2 - this time its serious....

Hello, I also don't know whether this is the best place to ask, but please would you delete this page? It is deprecated and it's information duplicated and expanded upon here. Thanks in advance.

Might I also be made an administrator, or at least someone with permission to delete pages I have created to avoid needing to bother you guys in future? I would understand if you decline this second element of my request. :)

Requester

Note Note: The best place to ask is on that particular wiki. This wiki is for the documentation of the MediaWiki software, and any requests here can and will only affect pages on the mediawiki.org domain. If you have a problem with another wiki, you need to ask there. Since I see the domain for that wiki ends in ".local" either it is a company/intranet wiki or a wiki you installed locally for testing. Either way, see Help:Deleting a page for more information on how to delete pages. --Skizzerz 14:32, 24 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
N Not done - As said above, this wiki is for documentation of the MediaWiki software. We cannot delete pages on that wiki since we are not local administrators there. As it is on a .local domain name, we cannot access that wiki. You should navigate to Special:ListAdmins on that wiki and request one of them to delete it. --GeorgeBarnick (talk) 19:10, 24 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion of Wawa06's posts

Can an administrator look into these LQT posts and maybe delete them? whym (talk) 09:18, 16 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Yes Done Someone else already deleted them, but I put a warning on the user's talk page. Will block if they continue. Thanks for reporting! --GeorgeBarnick (talk) 17:16, 17 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Semi-protection of How to contribute

Can you please semi-protect How to contribute and/or its translation pages for repeated vandalism? --Shirayuki (talk) 10:20, 30 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Done on How to contribute. Which translation pages in specific? I don't have time to look at the revision histories of all of them. Or are they all in need of protection? --GeorgeBarnick (talk) 14:44, 30 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I think the latter. Thanks in advance. --Shirayuki (talk) 21:16, 30 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Translation pages can't be protected because they can't be edited (only Special:Translate can edit them). If vandalism is serious, we could recursively protect all translation unit pages. --Nemo 05:20, 31 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, all unit pages should be protected recursively. e.g. be-tarask, ast
