Implementing a workflow for document revision

[edit]

In the past, the "official" documentation for a process was reviewed, sent to a printer, and then sat on shelves.

Wikis offer a speedier way to publish approved documentation and make it easily searchable. Using tools like Page Forms, Approved Revisions, and Semantic MediaWiki, a KM worker created a tool so that the appropriate people can be notified when a change has been made to some previously "approved" documentation so that they can approve the change or roll it back.

They are just rolling out this process, but it offers a way to fuse the approval process of print documentation with the flexibility and find-ability of the wiki.

We're developing a similar use case as a prototype Records Management System for a regulator. As well as maintaining an audit trail of who accesses and updates records, the workflow should support the 'governance' surrounding it including quality checks, comments and responses, and approvals. The wiki structure should also allow us to reference source information within the wiki and maintain version control when a source changes, whereby owners of records are notified if an approved source changes. We are working with Page Forms and Cargo to facilitate this and looking at options to adapt the extensions FlaggedRevs or ApprovedRevs to this environment. Enterprise MediaWiki

[edit]
  • Atlas Copco Gas and Process (GAP) division uses MediaWiki for knowledge management. --Bryandamon (talk)
  • Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E) uses MediaWiki in the Customer Care department for knowledge management. --Bryandamon (talk)
  • University Children's Hospital Zurich, Department of Anesthesia. Uses a SMW for clinical knowledge communication, lecture planning, airway device managment, blog/info screens, projects, contact management and other stuff. -- 11-G3n (talk) 16:16, 14 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Critical Care and Medicine Database uses a public/private pair of SMWs to document just about everything about it, data structures, processes, change management, etc. Our applications help links go right into the wiki, and we are exporting from the wiki for master versions of data tables in our apps. We use it internally, and it is also where we send external people who may want to use our data. Tenbergen (talk) 16:28, 17 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • We're using mediawiki with Page Forms, Cargo (Semantic Mediawiki in an earlier version) and TinyMCE extensions for 'Lean Performance Boards' to support daily huddles in the internal risk and compliance division of a financial regulator. This documents the risks and controls and allows us to track activities assigned to members of the team and others who are responsible for managing the risks. The risks are often managed over periods of years and the wiki is also a useful repository of information of its management and status throughout its life. Individual users can see and report their individual assignments as well as teams DuncanCrane (talk) 13:44, 18 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Wiki Farm - Gamepedia

[edit]

Gamepedia is a wiki farm with over 2,000 gaming related wikis. It runs a custom wiki management solution to quickly create new wikis on the fly.

We use our wiki farm currently to provide 'software as a service' solutions to different user groups. This allows different groups to share a single 'code' repository of extensions/config which supports multiple users each with their own content in a separate wiki database. We have one established group for Model Boat Clubs and are working on another for managing portfolios of project for organisations.DuncanCrane (talk) 13:50, 18 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Technical writing

[edit]

Writing about hobbyist electronics in music (SDIY wiki). Actually on wiki farm Miraheze now because that takes away a lot of the headache of maintaining the wiki and doesn't have the garish crud that other wiki farms come with.

Wikis as Websites

[edit]

MediaWiki can very well be used as regular content management system for running and maintaining websites that do not look like wikis for the users. Examples

Our user, a Model Boat Club, uses their wiki to provide a number of services to its members and the general public. The members and authors are mainly octogenarians and they are delighted that they can now maintain their website for themselves without relying on technicians to make updates for them. The site provides news feed, calendar, for sale, information, gallery and links. It also maintains a record of their race meets including the schedule and results, allowing them to compile statics relating to skippers and boats in different model classes over the years. It uses Page Forms and Semantic Mediawiki in its current public form and is currently being converted to use Cargo and the TinyMCE extension (http://phoenixmarinemodelclub.co.uk) DuncanCrane (talk) 14:02, 18 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Wikis as collaboration tools

[edit]

The classical use case: organise content and share knowledge with people outside of your organisation.
