Wikimedia Release Engineering Team/Onboarding/Next

From mediawiki.org

If you've made it here through the twisty maze of onboarding documentation: 🎉congratulations!

If you're reading this, it must mean you're bleary eyed from all the wiki editing and you're ready to do some technical tasks. Fortunately, your fellow relengers have made you a list of small tasks to get started: RelEng (🚀 Onboarding)

The RelEng (🚀 Onboarding) milestone in phabricator is a list of tasks that should be:

  1. Applicable to your new job
  2. Small enough to be completed in a week or so
  3. Someone thought they knew how to do it (at least in a vague way), so you should have help
  • Check in with Tyler or your onboarding buddy to help track down the right person to help with this task

Tips

[edit]
  • Don't get stuck for too long. If you spend too much time stuck talk to Tyler or your onboarding buddy.
  • Don't be afraid to ask a lot of questions. Being willing to look like you don't know what's going on in public is one of the best ways to get things done here.
  • Dabble. Don't get stuck on a task that's a slog, find something you like, try a few on for size before deciding to claim the task.
  • Claim the task when you start work in earnest. At the bottom of each task is a comment field. Use the Add Action... drop-down in the comment field to Assign/Claim the task and click Submit: congratulations—you're the proud assignee of a task.
