Review by AndroidPIT
[edit]Hi, the german Android Newspage AndroidPIT recently has reviewed the app: 3 of 5 stars! Read http://www.androidpit.de/de/android/tests/test/393495/Wikipedia-Mobil-Pool-des-Wissens, the article contains numerous suggestions for an enhancement of the app. If you need assistance for translating, contact me on my de.wp-talkpage. --Emha (talk) 12:25, 12 March 2012 (UTC)
Testing by Jarry1250
[edit]Tested against 1.1.4 on 21 March 2012 on Android 2.3.3 (Samsung Galaxy Ace GT-S5830) with a poor/variable WiFi connection.
Nearby
- Works nicely but the heading "< Nearby pages" is confusing at first; it took me a while to realise that the "<" (back indicator) and "Nearby Places" (title) are unrelated. Ditto "Saved pages".
- I'd also have expected "Nearby" when viewing (say) the article on the Eiffel Tower to show me a map of Paris, not my present location.
Read in
- Did its job nicely. But the words "Read in" imply a direct translation - which is incorrect - though I can't think of a better alternative (in English at least).
Share:
- Again, was functional, though sharing main pages results in odd titles - either the full URL, or "?useformat=mobile". This could be adjusted.
- Makes sense. Will fix. Yuvipanda (talk) 19:46, 21 March 2012 (UTC)
- I'm allowed to try to share "Nearby places" - of course, it actually shares the page I was on before, but that's not clear. Should be greyed out?
- Makes sense. Will fix Yuvipanda (talk) 19:46, 21 March 2012 (UTC)
- Sharing a page from a foreign Wikipedia resulted in the sending of an unsightly percent-encoded URL.
- We have no global 'short URL' service yet. So have to live with this for now Yuvipanda (talk) 19:46, 21 March 2012 (UTC)
- I rather meant that the link should be not-percent-encoded in the email? I'm not sure how safe that is though (presumably there's a reason why we invented percent encoding!). Jarry1250 (talk) 20:30, 21 March 2012 (UTC)
- The alternative is to just add unicode URLs - not universally supported Yuvipanda (talk) 22:30, 21 March 2012 (UTC)

- On some pages I found that the Share button (and the Save button) were in fact greyed out; I could only rectify this by quitting the app and starting afresh.
- Can you tell me what steps actually led to this state? They are supposed to be greyed out only on error pages. Was this when testing the nightlies (broken) or with the beta (nonbroken)? Yuvipanda (talk) 19:46, 21 March 2012 (UTC)
- Nightlies. Haven't been able to repro since, will let you know if I succeed. Jarry1250 (talk) 20:30, 21 March 2012 (UTC)

Save page / Saved pages
- Functional. "Save page" could be either greyed out or have a different symbol afterwards.
General Browsing
- When my internet flickered off momentarily, and I got the "not available offline", I was unable to refresh, I was presented with no link to do so nor a in-app back link.
- We rely on the Android back button (or for you to search) for now Yuvipanda (talk) 19:46, 21 March 2012 (UTC)
- Yeah, it just seems like a "try again" refresh link would be beneficial. Jarry1250 (talk) 20:30, 21 March 2012 (UTC)
- We rely on the Android back button (or for you to search) for now Yuvipanda (talk) 19:46, 21 March 2012 (UTC)
- After viewing only a handful of pages, my RAM footprint was as high as 40MB. (Presumably this is because quite a few of the pages ended up being locally cached?)
- Local caching took me completely by surprise; the "offline" message doesn't seem to indicate that this is performed at all.
- Only for things in your history. To enable back/forward when offline Yuvipanda (talk) 19:46, 21 March 2012 (UTC)
- Ah, I see. Makes sense. Jarry1250 (talk) 20:30, 21 March 2012 (UTC)

- Search worked nicely / as expected.
- History worked nicely / as expected.
Hope something useful comes of this, happy to followup, by email please :) Thanks, Jarry1250 (talk) 16:33, 21 March 2012 (UTC)
