THANK YOU for joining the Remote Wikimedia Hackathon. If you would like to provide feedback around how the event went for you and what future organizers can do to improve please add your feedback here. You can also check the same link for some participant / session data.
You can watch a recording of the hackathon showcase where 16 projects were presented here on YouTube or read about some of the projects that were completed on the Showcase or here on the event's etherpad.
Welcome to the organization page for the the Remote Hackathon! This event will be a virtual & social initiative as an alternative to the in-person event :) May 9 - 10, 2020 (Saturday - Sunday) — fully remote!
We are learning as we go around how to organize virtual events - so please bring both your ideas for your own work as well as ideas for how to help us improve this event. All of the facilitators at the bottom of this page are here to help you with any ideas that you have - but you should also feel very empowered to add your own ideas or make changes without checking with us first.

Code of Conduct for Technical Spaces
The Code of Conduct for Wikimedia's Technical Spaces will be in effect at the Remote Hackathon.
If you are interested in participating please review the code of conduct and ensure you are willing and able to follow it.
Overview
The intention of this initiative is to provide a virtual space for folks to spend time with each other, work on projects, and have fun!
All projects, people, and ideas are welcome and this meeting will be created for and by the participants. Feel free to add your ideas to the section below.
Before deploying potentially risky or large features during this time, please read and follow wikitech:Deployments/Covid-19. There is reduced capacity for deployments due to Covid-19.
Everyone who wants to join the event, is welcome.
CHANGE: After some discussions within the facilitators group we have decided to reduce this to a two day weekend event. We hope this will allow more folks to prioritize and end up being online and participating at the same time.
How to participate
Everyone:
- Your first step should be stopping into the telegram or IRC channels and saying hi! Introduce yourself and say what you are planning to work on, what you can help with, what you need help with. Keep people up to date with what are you doing as the event progresses, too!
- Don't forget to add anything you are working on the the Phabricator work-board also. That way people can see what is happening and comment or join in more easily on your project.
- As the event progresses, make any changes you need. Do you feel the need to have a never ending social video call to make jokes about farm animals? Start one and tell us! Do you want people to provide feedback on your work so far? Start a video call or telegram channel and ask people to join. Would you like to accomplish something but don't know how? Ask in the main chats and someone will help you.
- If you would like to specifically spend time helping newcomers or people who don't know what to do - please join our dedicated Remote Hackathon Newcomer Support telegram channel.
- Make sure you stop in and provide some feedback on the mediawiki feedback page and your suggestions for future remote conference organizers.
- Possible ideas list and short pitches are here https://etherpad.wikimedia.org/p/virtual-wmhack2020-projects
Newcomers:
- We have a Remote Hackathon Newcomer Support telegram channel where you can join to get even more personalized support. No question is too basic and people will be around most of the time to help you find something to do.
- Read through our How to Contribute page on MediaWiki to get started
- Don't forget to introduce yourself in the main telegram channel and express your interests
- Make sure you stop in and provide some feedback on the mediawiki feedback page and your suggestions for future remote conference organizers. All feedback, even small feedback is very welcome!
Communication
Our main communication channels will be the Wikimedia Hackathon telegram channel and the #wmhack on IRC and which are linked together.
- Join our Telegram Group Chat: To enhance the social experience among participants, we have created a Telegram Group Chat "Wikimedia Hackathon" @wmhack. Anyone can join via this link: https://t.me/wmhack
- Join IRC: This is the main communication channel that our developer community uses. Install an IRC client or use IRC in your browser: Go to channel #wmhack connect on chat.freenode.net, add a Nickname (ex: "yourname"), click the check box to prove you're not a robot, click "Connect" and you are in our channel!
[ For the IRC cloud in the browser ] You shall be prompted to join 'NickServ', once you shall try to join the channel # wmhack before registering your nickname.
Steps to do so are hereinafter mentioned:
- Write 'REGISTER YourNewPassword email@email.com' in the editor provided there.
- An email containing nickname activation instructions shall be sent to the provided email address.
- Copy the code provided in that email & paste it in the editor provided here in the IRC cloud.
All projects can be tracked on Phabricator as usual.
Event Schedule
If you would like to schedule a chat about a specific project or topic or a video call at any time, please use this location to schedule.
You can schedule trainings, meetings, general sessions, social meet-ups, meal-times, etc. If you schedule it, please plan to lead it!
We will be scheduling in the Albanian timezone GMT+2/CEST in honor of the original hackathon's organizing team from Albania.
Scheduling tips
- Anybody can schedule a session
- Scheduling a session at the same time as another session is completely OK, but please try to consider a different time if there could be a lot of interest / topic overlap.
- Here are some community gathered tips for different video / streaming programs use. You are welcome to use whatever tool works best for you.
- If you are trying to create a session and want some help, ask for it in telegram!
- Use https://zonestamp.com/ to make sure people can see when the session starts in their own timezone.
- If you are giving a presentation, please consider recording your session and leaving a link to your recording in the program when you finish.
- If you are organizing a session, consider having another participant in the session who help people who join mid-session understand whats going on.
- The only requirement is to please mention and follow the friendly space policy or code of conduct.
Ideas of sessions
If you have ideas of sessions or examples but don't want to add them in the schedule yet, feel free to add them here!
