Add topic--Wikitemania (talk) 20:37, 22 April 2014 (UTC)== Wikimedia maintenance notice ==
Hi. Wikimedia maintenance notice and all of its subpages do not belong on this site. I think there's some general confusion about the purpose of this site. It's for the MediaWiki software. That's it. Meta-Wiki is much older and is the established place for inter-wiki communications such as these. Because the banner is currently up, I'm not going to forcefully move all of these pages, but they should be moved as soon as possible. --MZMcBride 16:42, 24 May 2011 (UTC)
- Actually, do we have a location we can house notices that doesn't go away when the site is down? Because that would be ideal. -- ArielGlenn 16:52, 24 May 2011 (UTC)
- Sorry to butt in but I thought this might be related, someone was asking earlier, if it would be possible to modify the 404 page with notices and links to an upcoming outage. Theo10011 17:05, 24 May 2011 (UTC)
- I don't imagine many people hit 404s during outages like these. It might be possible to modify some HTTP error code messages to include a link to status.wikimedia.org or something. File bugs in Bugzilla as appropriate. --MZMcBride 17:10, 24 May 2011 (UTC)
- The wikitech.wikimedia.org host is supposed to be separated from the main cluster for that reason. Though I have no idea what the load spike would be from a global banner with a link, so that might be something to consider. Meta-Wiki is the most logical place among Wikimedia wikis. If the wikitech host isn't an option, the status.wikimedia.org host might also be logical. Pretty much "anywhere but here." ;-) --MZMcBride 17:10, 24 May 2011 (UTC)
- Hi. My apologies for not responding sooner. Someone asked me on IRC why I had put the page here, and my answer was: "The last time we used a maintenance banner was for the deployment of MediaWiki 1.17, and the page we linked to back then was on mediawiki.org". I had only a few hours to prepare this last week, and I just didn't think much about which wiki was best.
- I agree meta is the logical place for this set of pages, which is why I've just exported them there. There are reasons for using the wikitech wiki, but also reasons for not using it (e.g. it's not a SUL wiki, people can't contribute translations there, etc.).
- Maybe we'll find a better place in the future (e.g. a place that doesn't go down when the site is down, but can still handle high traffic when linked from CentralNotice, and where people can contribute translations), but for now meta is a good enough place. guillom 13:38, 30 May 2011 (UTC)
WMF projects updates
[edit]Creative use of LabeledSectionTransclusion could help to automagically include status updated about single projects from the monthly report (or viceversa). Nemo 16:48, 9 June 2011 (UTC)
- Great minds! This is exactly why I had LabeledSectionTransclusion enabled on this wiki :) See Template:Wikimedia engineering project information for example. That said, right now I'm only using it for basic project information, and not yet for statuses, because I need to finish to convert the pages to the new format. guillom 16:55, 9 June 2011 (UTC)
Temporary redirect
[edit]Hi. How temporary is this? --MZMcBride 23:08, 18 October 2011 (UTC)
- Hey. I never got around to officially publishing the draft index that lies in my user space, mostly because I haven't found a way to handle projects hosted outside mw.o. I'm very busy until the end of October with the MediaWiki architecture document, but if you have ideas in the meantime, I welcome them. guillom 08:46, 19 October 2011 (UTC)
Status updates from the future
[edit]I was just looking at some of the recent status updates and noticed that they all seem to be from five days from now. Why are they labelled like that? --Yair rand 18:06, 26 October 2011 (UTC)
- Hi. These updates are transcluded from the monthly report (Wikimedia engineering report/2011/October), so I use the date of the last day of that month. The updates are expected to be an accurate reflection of what happened during that month, so if there's new information in the next 5 days, the statuses will be updated. excellent MediaWiki architecture document, possible intro
[edit]I found MediaWiki architecture document/text from Sumana Harihareswara's post mentioning it, it's fantastic!
I assume then it will get categories and a lot of missing wiki linking (few will have heard of en:PECL). If you need help with that, let me know ("spage" on the server skierpage.com). Already it's so good I added a link to it to Manual:MediaWiki architecture
A diagram or bulleted list of Wikipedia vs. Wikimedia vs. MediaWiki would help and could serve as an intro e,g,
- Everyone's heard of Wikipedia, the free, web-based, collaborative, multilingual encyclopedia project. It and similar collaborative knowledge projects such as Wiktionary and Wikiquote are supported by the non-profit Wikimedia Foundation. They run on the software platform MediaWiki, free and open source software written in PHP. The common theme in each name is wiki, a website that allows users to create and collaboratively edit web pages via a web browser..
-- skierpage 23:55, 13 November 2011 (UTC)
- Right now I don't think wiki-linking categorization is a priority given that this is primarily focused for inclusion elsewhere (A book, right?). Later though, probably. Johnduhart 23:59, 13 November 2011 (UTC)
Hi. In this edit, there's an incomplete sentence ("Templates and ParserFunctions were introduced to allow end users of MediaWiki to build , effectively turning wikitext into a limited programming language.") that's still incomplete. Any idea what you were going for? --MZMcBride 03:52, 27 January 2012 (UTC)
- Ugh, thanks. I just added some stuff that I think is what I intended to put in there back then. I hope it makes some sense. guillom 10:21, 27 January 2012 (UTC)

Screenshots and categories
[edit]Hello, is there any way to make WMF employees categorize their images and files? Especially when one is uploading dozens of screenshots or mockups for their software development project, I suppose they want them to actually be seen and not just lost in an ocean of unbrowsable files. Currently, the only reliable way to find such files is to open the upload log of all WMF employees/contractors (and there are hundreds) on both commons and mediawiki.org; files in some of the subcats of commons:Category:Wikimedia Foundation software development and commons:Category:MediaWiki extensions were practically impossible to find.
Creating a category is really not that hard, they probably only need to know that they can/should create one for their project under one of those two on Commons.
The same for licensing info and so on, by the way; a normal CC-BY-SA tag and/or something as simple as {{free software}} is usually enough of a file description, without filling all the forms etc.; and if even WMF employees were too scared by Commons to find out, I'd really be extremely depressed. --Nemo 07:48, 30 August 2012 (UTC)
Hi. I just noticed your redesign of How to contribute. This is wonderful and you're wonderful. :-) --MZMcBride (talk) 22:57, 25 March 2013 (UTC)
See new look of the MediaWiki/ru as example. Calling of {{New opportunities/Content }} in the basepage gives the correct result. These same calling in the MediaWiki/ru (or another subpage with language, which does not have own version of this template) - gives very bad result. More localized versions of Main Pages was broken. My attempts to fix something - unsuccessful. This strange behavior of Semantic MW Extension, as i understood. Please check and fix it! --Kaganer (talk) 16:34, 28 March 2013 (UTC)
- Argh, I'm sorry. Fixing now. guillom 17:43, 28 March 2013 (UTC)
- All subpages should be fixed now (with this edit). Apologies for the issue. Let me know if you noticed something else that's broken! guillom 17:49, 28 March 2013 (UTC)
- Now everything looks good. Thank you! --Kaganer (talk) 19:28, 28 March 2013 (UTC)
Translate tag + templates = ??????
[edit]Hi Guillom! Something happened here. The template looks good when it's not transcluded but is broken/borken on all pages transcluding it: Mobile/Strategy, User icons, Enterprise hub, etc. Purging did't help. To add to the mystery, it looks good if expanded using Special:ExpandTemplates. jonkerz♠ 13:57, 24 June 2013 (UTC)
- P.S. I found {{Translatable navigation template }} while trying to debug this. I'm not sure if it has anything to do with the above, but you may find it helpful. jonkerz♠ 13:59, 24 June 2013 (UTC)
- I'm really sorry; I set up the translation for {{Draft }} and I completely forgot to update it for existing pages. Basically, there are two ways to handle template translation. One is to use the template with {{Translatable navigation template }}, but it requires to update all existing transclusions of the template, i.e. replace
{{draft}}
everywhere by{{Translatable navigation template|draft}}
. This is quite inconvenient, so I usually prefer the second method: have the core template in a subpage (Template:Draft/core), and call the template translation directly from the template (Template:Draft). The advantage of this method is that all the pages currently using{{draft}}
don't need to be changed at all. Now everything should be working fine; let me know if you encounter pages where it's broken. And thank you for reminding me to fix this :) guillom 16:39, 24 June 2013 (UTC)- Well done, thanks a lot :) jonkerz ♠talk 21:00, 24 June 2013 (UTC)

Missing words?

What's next?
[edit]Hi Guillom,
Help:VisualEditor/FAQ/pl is 100% and checked. Is there anything else that needs to be done, or can it be moved to pl.wp now? Is there anything special about how these pages should be moved (e.g., with the PD license)? (Feel free to point me at a doc page, so I can Read The Fine Manual.) Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 17:12, 10 July 2013 (UTC)
- Hi :) There isn't anything else to be done once it's translated, as far as I know. The VisualEditor/Portal/Localization page gives some advice and directions, but basically it's just a copy/paste, made easier by the fact that it's under a PD license. There's a catch if you're copying to an English-language wiki (see the manual) but otherwise, it's pretty straightforward. Let me know if you have any issues. guillom 18:50, 10 July 2013 (UTC)
Next question: What, if anything, should I do with the "100% complete" translation here that still contains a significant amount of English text? Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 20:45, 10 July 2013 (UTC)
- You could ask translators to continue the translations :) Joke aside, what I've done on the French Wikipedia is I copy/pasted incomplete translations, then re-synchronized it with the mediawiki.org version when it was expanded. In the particular case you're mentioning, the translation is marked as 100% because there are translations for all the items on the page, but some of the translations include English text, and it's those that need to be re-edited to be fully translated. VE translation
[edit]Hi, Guillom. Do you think we may start translation of VisualEditor/Portal/Help and VisualEditor/Portal/New users, too? or wait for a while? --miya (talk) 23:41, 13 July 2013 (UTC)
- Hi miya. I'll prepare these pages for translation today, so that you can translate them. Thank you for all your amazing work :) guillom 08:03, 15 July 2013 (UTC)
- Miya (who is amazing) has done the translation for the Japanese banner, but it's not displaying. Can you look into it? If this doesn't go up ASAP, then I think we should postpone their launch for at least a few days. Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 17:33, 17 July 2013 (UTC)
- This was my fault. I had double-checked the list of languages in the banner's configuration, but I must have missed a step and not saved the correct list. It should be fixed now. guillom 06:58, 18 July 2013 (UTC)

Re: “temporary rv until the change is deployed”
[edit]Ummm… deployed to where? How do you suppose I found out about the change? I was trying to make a localized screenshot of the “Insert Reference” button, only to learn there is no such button; only after that, I looked at the git log to find the change. So: The change is obviously deployed both here and at the English Wikipedia, at least; just give it a try. --Mormegil (talk) 16:36, 16 July 2013 (UTC)
- Hi; since you linked to gerrit, I thought you had learned about it there. Gerrit said the change was included in
master
, which I've been told means it hasn't been deployed yet (in which case it would be included in awmfXX
branch. Either I misunderstood or what I was told was incorrect :) I've restored your version. guillom 17:22, 16 July 2013 (UTC)

translating sandbox
[edit]Hi Guillom, why would we have to translate your sandbox? [1] Greetings --Larsnl (talk) 17:45, 18 July 2013 (UTC)

I've "discouraged" it for translation in the admin interface. Thank you for pointing it out to me. guillom 18:02, 18 July 2013 (UTC)

Archiving old /status entries?
[edit]Hey,
Is there a way we can archive old /status entries? The VisualEditor/status page is getting pretty long, but I don't want to break any old transclusions…
Jdforrester (WMF) (talk) 19:57, 4 April 2014 (UTC)
- Jdforrester (WMF): At the moment, archiving any -monthly status would break old monthly reports. There are several options to solve this problem, like subst:ing old reports, archiving and fixing transclusion links, or making the transclusion system more flexible (the latter is on my list for this quarter for other reasons). So the short answer is: I'm thinking about it, and if you can give me a few weeks I'm going to try and find the best way to do this :) guillom 13:23, 7 April 2014 (UTC)
- @Guillom: Works for me. :-) Jdforrester (WMF) (talk) 16:36, 7 April 2014 (UTC)
- Would it be more or less functional if people started using a page name like VisualEditor/2014/status, from the beginning? That way, you have a planned annual "archive" without needing to subst or to update any links later. Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 21:50, 7 April 2014 (UTC)
- Whatamidoing (WMF): Yes, that would be the new default behavior if we went the "archiving and fixing transclusion links" route, but it would require changing MediaWiki:Gadget-WmfProjectStatusHelper.js which is something I'd like to avoid since it's more or less unmaintained at the moment. There are also more radical options like moving project reporting to Phabricator if we migrate our other development tools there as well. So this is a complex topic :) guillom

The Wikimedia Foundation and MediaWiki
[edit]Hello, I would like to know if the Wikimedia Foundation, is able to support a project using a wiki software other than MediaWiki? In my analysis, it seems possible but you are more authorized than I am. Hoping for an answer from you, W--Wikitemania (talk) 20:37, 22 April 2014 (UTC)

Feedback
[edit]Re-reading Requests for comment/Phabricator and Project management tools/Review/Options, in retrospect, thought it'd've been wiser to request comments on the latter. Inactive bot account
[edit]Hi. At Project:Requests/User rights/Removal of inactive bot rights (2) there is a proposal to remove the bot rights of inactive bots. Since you appear to be the operator of one of the bots in question, I wanted to draw your attention to the discussion. Please let us know if the rights are still needed (or if they aren't). How we will see unregistered users
[edit]Hi!
You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.
When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.
Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.
If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.
We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.
Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

Your advanced permissions on mediawiki
[edit]Hello. A policy regarding the removal of "advanced rights" (administrator, bureaucrat, interface administrator, etc.) was adopted by community consensus in 2013. According to this policy, the stewards are reviewing activity on wikis with no inactivity policy.
You meet the inactivity criteria (no edits and no logged actions for 2 years) on this wiki. Since this wiki, to the best of our knowledge, does not have its own rights review process, the global one applies.
If you want to keep your advanced permissions, you should inform the community of the wiki about the fact that the stewards have sent you this information about your inactivity. A community notice about this process has been also posted on the local Village Pump of this wiki. If the community has a discussion about it and then wants you to keep your rights, please contact the stewards at the m:Stewards' noticeboard, and link to the discussion of the local community, where they express their wish to continue to maintain the rights.
If you wish to resign your rights, please request removal of your rights on Meta.
If there is no response at all after one month, stewards will proceed to remove your administrator and/or bureaucrat rights. In ambiguous cases, stewards will evaluate the responses and will refer a decision back to the local community for their comment and review. If you have any questions, please contact the stewards.
Yours faithfully. Superpes15 (talk) 18:38, 7 February 2024 (UTC)
