Naming of the tabs

[edit]

The naming of the tabs is suboptimal: Edit vs. Edit Source, it should be Edit vs. Edit with VE, as the normal Wikieditor should be the one without any appendix. Or both should get an appendix, as it is now it's just the wet dream of the VE developers, who want their new kid on the block get preferred status. Why are the talk pages of the translated pages in Flow?

[edit]

Who had the stupid idea to make the talk pages of the translated versions Flow? They should all be redirects here, but with that stupid forum impersonation that's not possible. How far will the fanboys of that piece of junk go to push it down the throats of all users? Grüße vom Sänger ♫(Reden) 21:34, 16 April 2016 (UTC)Reply

All Talk: pages at this wiki default to Flow, and have for a while. I've heard that it was done because the community here received five complaints within a day or two that the users wanted Flow pages and couldn't figure out how to start them.
Do you have comments about the translations? Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 15:06, 17 April 2016 (UTC)Reply
The talk pages of the translated versions should be just #redirect edit tab, as there should be only one page for discussions. It was possible before to simply write that there on the talk pages after translation of the main page, now with this unwanted and useless forum impersonation it is no longer. Here is a proper talk page, why isn't it in the other languages? Grüße vom Sänger ♫(Reden) 17:48, 17 April 2016 (UTC)Reply
Any Talk: page that didn't exist before the change to Flow-as-default is now a Flow page. (Technically, those pages don't exist, so it's "offering" a Flow page, rather than anything really existing there.) Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 16:26, 18 April 2016 (UTC)Reply
So how will you get this right now? I, as a normal user, can't redirect a useless (in the sense of it should not be there in any shape, even as a proper talk page) Flow page to here, I could do so (and did) in the past. It's you duty as an admin (I think you have this status as an employee) to do so, if you were so eager to implement this useless (in the general sense) Flow page anywhere. When will you do so? Or will you guarantee that all such talkpages are properly maintained by you paid staff? Grüße vom Sänger ♫(Reden) 18:14, 18 April 2016 (UTC)Reply

Deployment to other wikipedias

[edit]

What is the timeline for this? Portuguese Wikipedia is heavy on using VisualEditor ([1]), and this would probably help most users. GoEThe (talk) 11:28, 8 July 2016 (UTC)Reply

Losing the visual editor

[edit]

w:en:Wikipedia:VisualEditor/Feedback/Archive_2017_1#No_easy_way_to_get_back_to_VisualEditor seems to be a persistent theme with the single edit tab in its "remember my last" configuration. Editors use the visual mode, and then leave a note on the talk page (which is wikitext-only), and then end up in wikitext mode when they move back to the mainspace. Translation of interfaces

[edit]

To get coherence between the set of translated screenshots and for easy recognition of a same screenshot set, topic → https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Topic:Wx2a3bcx0gohhgjt is being implemented to fit with use of template lm which makes the job for us.

Your screenshot must be without File: and without suffix (expected '.png' as defined here in the EN root page, and underscore _ is separator to isolate the language id in lowercases)

Ex:

frameless|216px|border

is replaced by :

Edit tab in MediaWiki one button|png|_}}|frameless|216px|border

which means that on Commons, image 'File:Edit tab in MediaWiki one button.png' is by default the root EN reference of the snapshot.

French contributor will then provide his own screenshot under name 'File:Edit tab in MediaWiki one button_fr.png' and transclusion will be automatic in the /fr page. If the _fr image is missing, template lm will automatically load the root EN snapshot instead.

Filenames are left to warn the translator that the file has changed (or not).

Old screenshots names are left, but new ones are suffixed with the year they have been made.

For exemple 'File:Edit tab in MediaWiki one button.png' could become 'File:Edit tab in MediaWiki_2022.png' warning the xx language translators that a file 'File:Edit tab in MediaWiki_2022_xx.png' is required.

Possible 'rename' actions can be requested in Commons for a dedicated image. Are concerned:

T:41--> File:Edit tab in MediaWiki one button.png

T:42--> File:Edit tab in MediaWiki two buttons.png

T:43--> File:VisualEditor single edit tab preference dialog.png

T:44--> File:VisualEditor single edit tab in preferences 2015-12-18.png

T:45--> File:Edit tab in MediaWiki one button.png

T:46--> File:Edit tab in MediaWiki two buttons.png

T:47--> File:Section editing in MediaWiki one button.png

T:48--> File:Section editing in MediaWiki two buttons.png

T:49--> File:Edit_tab_in_MediaWiki_one_button.png

T:50--> File:Section_editing_in_MediaWiki_one_button.png

T:51--> File:Single edit tab popup for anons.png

T:52--> File:VisualEditor bi-directional switching pencil icon in wikitext.png

Of course users can keep their own images, but hardcoding thus their own interface like for example :

Translations:VisualEditor/Single edit tab/41/hu
Edit tab in MediaWiki one button
